MCPS is committed to providing opportunities for students with disabilities to receive instruction in the general education setting. Practices are being developed to insure that instructional accommodations and differentiated instructional strategies are provided so that students with disabilities are successful in less restrictive settings. MCPS is working toward providing opportunities for students to access a rigorous academic program and meeting the Maryland State Department of Education's recommended guidelines of providing special education and related services to 80% of students with disabilities in the general education environment up to 80% of the school week.

Children who receive special education services outside of a regular classroom less than 21% of the day are considered to be in the educational setting of LRE (Least Restrictive Environment) A. The percentage of special education students in general education has increased by 9 percentage points over the past three years bringing LRE A to 57.1%. The Maryland State Department of Education requires LRE A to be 80%. Within this group, white males are most frequently placed in general education followed by white females.
