The Montgomery County Public Schools
is in the midst of a multiyear reform initiative designed
to raise the level of student achievement to rigorous
standards of academic performance. Begun in 1999, the
initiative incorporates long-standing plans and expectations
for educational excellence in Montgomery County and
provides new reforms designed to align the entire instructional
program into a seamless process of teaching and learning
from pre-kindergarten through high school.

The strategic planning process, developed in conjunction with parent, staff,
and community input, has placed greater emphasis on consistency, continuity,
and congruency in curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional development,
technology, research, and operational support. Based on detailed strategic planning,
the initiatives under way in Montgomery County are designed to achieve the standards
set by the Board of Education and the newly identified state and federal standards.

The pursuit of excellence in
Montgomery County reflects a shared vision for improved student
achievement and the capacity for leadership and collaboration
by the Board of Education and the superintendent of schools – working
with senior and central office staff, principals, teachers,
support staff, parents, employee organizations, and community
members throughout the school system and county. Each school
and office engages in highly detailed planning, evaluation,
and assessment in a dynamic process that involves external
stakeholders in meaningful and productive partnerships. Directed
at making continuous progress toward specific goals and objectives,
the school system’s efforts focus on achieving the
community’s desire for creating a world-class educational
program.
