Overview

The many additional hours devoted to the study of musical performance by a small population of students in Montgomery County Public Schools have gone unrecognized. The honors level designation and course credit provide those students who seek the highest level of commitment and excellence in music with the opportunity to gain credit for their advanced level of study. This will provide students with the appropriate recognition of their accomplishments.

In addition to being enrolled in school musical groups, these students participate regularly in non-MCPS performing groups. They also actively pursue musical activities which far exceed requirements to meet regular course objectives.

School music teachers create differentiated course objectives for students who seek honors level credit and guide them through the jury examination and portfolio assessment activities.

Students who seek honors level credit in music performance classes must be enrolled in a regular ensemble to gain honors level credit. In the absence of an MCPS performing arts high school or magnet, the modification to these advanced level courses is designed to encourage students to aspire to an honors level of performance. This will benefit MCPS students by making them more competitive with students from school systems which offer the performing arts high school or magnet school option.
