HONORS LEVEL CREDIT: OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES: Overall Objectives for Meeting Honors Level Credit Music Performance Classes

Back to Honors Credit Table of Contents

I OBJECTIVES: GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Objective 1 Scales

The student will perform from memory, at the appropriate metronome marking, those scales as specified on the Individual Performance Requirement Sheet. The assessment of scale performance will take into consideration the note accuracy with which the scales are performed, the tone quality, intonation, and precise tempo of the performance. A pass/fail rating will be assigned.

Objective 2 Etudes

The student will be able to perform the required etudes as specified on the Individual Performance Requirement Sheet. Solo RepertoireThe student will prepare, with piano accompaniment if the composer has written or arranged an accompaniment, solo selections as listed on the Individual Performance Requirement Sheet.

Major section repeats, da capos, etc., should be ignored. The audition committee reserves the right to ask the performer to shorten the piece or hear only sections which limit the performance to eight minutes. For extended sonatas and concerti, the performer should prepare contrasting sections which stay within the time limit. Students are responsible for supplying their own accompanists.

The Music Educators National Conference Solo Adjudication Form will be used by each of three adjudicators and the Maryland Music Educators rating plan will be in effect.

Students must receive a I or II rating to qualify in this area. Sightreading and Improvisation (For Jazz Ensemble only). Please consult the Individual Performance Requirement Sheet for specific requirements in these areas.

Objective 3 Written/ Performance Portfolio Project:

The student will present an approved written report (minimum of 2,500 words) on any phase of music history and culture. An audio cassette taped recording of an original musical composition or arrangement may be substituted for the written project. The musical work should not exceed three minutes. The project will demonstrate an effort comparable to a semester term paper. Content, presentation, research form, and English mechanics will be assessed in determining completion of this objective. A pass/fail evaluation will be assigned to the student's work in this area.

Alternative to written project:

Students may perform objectives in scales, sightreading/improvisation (jazz only), and solo repertoire on an instrument different from the student's major instrument. The solo repertoire will be adjusted to solos in the grade four category from the MBDA (Maryland Band Directors Association), NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association), or other state lists.

If the student chooses piano, guitar, or a nontraditional instrument, the local school instrumental music teacher will verify the level of difficulty and suitability of the repertoire.

Percussion majors are not permitted to substitute performance on other percussion instruments and wind instrumentalists are not permitted to substitute performance on instruments which have the same fingering system as their major instrument. For example: piccolo/flute, alto/tenor saxophone, clarinet/bass clarinet, etc.

Objective 4 Outside Activities Portfolio Project

The student and designated sponsors will complete Form 3, Outside Activities Verification, which documents a minimum of forty hours of student participation in musical activities outside of the regular school day.

Some examples of outside activities could include rehearsals and performances with local youth orchestras, co-curricular music ensembles, and private lessons.
