About this Lesson
  • The following lessons come from the MCPS Pre-K Quarter 2 instructional guide for Reading, Writing, and Language Arts.

    As stated in the MCPS Quarter 2 Pre-K instructional guide:

    Phonemic awareness is the conscious awareness of the smallest unit of sound in spoke language, phonemes…Before students can understand written language they need to have a strong understanding of spoken language. Pre-kindergarten students need to explore and experiment with language to learn about the sounds of the language.” (pg.52)

    Rhyming is a difficult phonemic awareness skill particularly for English Language Learners. The following video segments, demonstrate that appropriate small group instructional practice for a Full Day Head start program.

  • Literacy Goals
    • Students will be able to recognize and repeat rhymes and patterns in language
    • Students will be able to participate in group readings of rhymes, repetitive phrases, and alliteration in stories, poems and chants.

  • Mastery Objective
    • Students will be able to identify objects, pictures and words that rhyme. Criteria for Success :
      • independent practice with coaching in matching rhyming objects
      • independent practice with coaching in matching rhyming words and pictures
      • independent practice with coaching in matching rhyming pictures

  • Indicator
    • 2. PK.2.3 Participate in group readings of rhyme, repetitive phrases and alliteration in stories, poems and chants.
    • 5. PK2.2 Recognize and repeat rhymes and patterns in language.
