CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development
courses. The Maryland State Department of Education
(MSDE) now refers to in-service courses as CPDs.
CPDs are MSDE approved credit-bearing courses.
CPD credits count toward salary advancement and
certification renewals for professional staff.
Support staff and substitutes are encouraged
to register for CPDs and can be considered on
a space available basis. Please check with the
Certification office for additional information.

Reading Courses that Meet MSDE Reading Requirements (PDF)
Alternative to Completing Course Work:
Applicants or current certificate holders with certification
in:
- early childhood
- elementary, or special education at the early
childhood and elementary levels may test out
of the reading requirement (12 semester hours)
by a score of 173 or higher on the Praxis II
assessment called Reading Across the Curriculum:
Elementary.

Information about The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian
In its continuing effort to support classroom teachers, the U.S. Department of Education recently unveiled a new online tool that offers elementary and secondary school teachers on-demand professional development training for improving student achievement.
The Teacher-to-Teacher e-Learning resource, offered free of charge, links educators to a collection of videos from the Department's summer workshops for teachers.

MCPS teachers have priority for all CPD courses. Non-public, long-term leave, substitute teachers, and supporting services staff are placed on a space availability basis. Check your email on a regular basis prior to the start of class in case you have been moved to the wait list or dropped from a class.
There will be a $50 non-refundable fee per course plus $30 per credit. Checks should be made payable to MCPS and sent to the following address prior to the beginning of the course:
