WORKING TITLE: Principal, High School GRADE: Q MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, is responsible for administering and supervising the total school program and providing educational leadership for the students and staff members consistent with the educational goals of the community. Functions of positions in the classification vary and include establishing a climate conducive to learning, defining roles, planning and coordinating programs, effecting change, and decision-making. While the principal is responsible for the total school program, many of the duties listed below may be delegated to assistants for implementation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) policies and procedures, the Call to Action Plan, the Program of Studies, and state and federal regulations and laws. Thorough knowledge of curriculum, instruction, organizational patterns, school operations, and pupil services. Demonstrated competence in staff selection, training, supervision and evaluation. Demonstrated problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to act effectively under stress. Ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to ensure outstanding performance as well as good morale. Excellent oral and written communication skills . Excellent interpersonal skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in supervision, educational administration and secondary school curriculum. Doctorate desirable. Minimum of 5 years in teaching, administration or supervision of which at least 3 years must have been teaching in a secondary school classroom. Completion of administrative internship program and/or experience as an assistant principal desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meet Maryland certification requirements for Administrator II.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) None
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Work beyond a 40-hour week and attendance at evening and weekend meetings, as required. Ability to respond to school requirements at any time.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Analyzes, shares, and uses school and student achievement data to develop and implement the school improvement management plan.

Implements systematic procedures to assess program effectiveness.

Monitors curriculum implementation to ensure that the appropriate content and sequence are followed.

Ensures that MCPS policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws are followed.

Develops a master schedule and related duty assignments.

Coordinates the development and implementation of a school discipline policy that is consistent with the MCPS policy on Student Rights and Responsibilities and state law.

Works with teachers, parents, the Educational Management Team and the School Admission, Review and Dismissal Team to ensure appropriate programming for all students.

Identifies staff training needs; develops and implements school improvement training plan to meet those needs.

Supervises and evaluates staff.

Develops requests for staffing and resources.

Supervises the use and maintenance of the building and grounds.

Prepares a variety of written reports and correspondence.

Establishes and maintain relationships with the PTA and other community organizations to ensure ongoing, two-way communication and initiate activities which foster productive parent and community involvement.

Serves on MCPS task forces and committees.

Performs related work as required.
