WORKING TITLE: Teacher, Outdoor Environmental Education Program GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under supervision, coordinates and facilitates the outdoor environmental education experiences for Pre-K through 12 students in assigned schools, and as a teacher, creates and teaches objective based environmental lessons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the educational process; extensive knowledge of MCPS curriculum, instruction, and assessments; ability to work effectively with students and collaboratively with teachers. Knowledge of adolescent development, content expertise, and MCPS curriculum and policies. Commitment to the belief that all students can learn characterized by high content and high expectations for all learners. Ability to use a variety of instructional and behavioral management strategies appropriate to the needs of middle school adolescents. Excellent planning, organization, management, communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university with knowledge of adolescent learner. A minimum of three years teaching experience and experience as a lead teacher. Completion of MCPS CPD Courses EE-02, Teaching Techniques for Outdoor Education; EE-07 Using Environmental Issues as a Context for Learning; EE-06, Confidence Course Instructors Workshop, preferred.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification requirements in an appropriate field of education. Certification in earth science or environmental science is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. You must be prepared daily to be physically active and outside in all types of weather, for example hiking up to 5 miles a day.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by MCEA contract. Evening and overnight (with stipend) work required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinates the 6th Grade residential program for at least 15 middle schools.

Meets with school-based Outdoor Education organizers and teams to provide assistance, guidance, and resources in order to prepare them to offer rigorous instruction to students and a smoothly operating program.

Teaches environmental education lessons to students while at Outdoor Ed and assesses learning.

Instructs large groups of students and adults in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings.

Assists in the development and revision of outdoor environmental education curriculum and instructional materials that support Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) indicators, align with MCPS curriculum, and prepare students for state and local assessments.

Assists with planning and implementing annual Outdoor Environmental Education Program (OEEP) Open Houses and Local School Organizers meetings.

Assists schools with overnight programming by spending the night on site for the first night of each outdoor education session.

Assists schools with strategies to increase OEEP student participation among under-represented subpopulations.
Promotes the vision and mission of OEEP.

Develops, implements, and evaluates day programs aligned to MCPS curriculum at the elementary school level and the high school level.

Provides professional development for MCPS teachers in the area of outdoor environmental education through workshops, in-service courses, CPD classes, and coaching.

Helps provide MCPS teachers with assistance, guidance, and resources to use the outdoors as a classroom for students.
Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
