SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: The Middle School Accelerated and Enriched Instructional/Literacy Coach supports critical thinking, in reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing across the content areas. This teacher leader organizes and facilitates the development the school's literacy plan. The AEI Literacy Coach coordinates the literacy acceleration and intervention programs for students. This teacher leader works directly with adults to support the implementation of the instructional program and provides feedback to teachers to assist them in improving teaching and learning. The Middle School AEI Literacy Coach is an exemplary teacher and has demonstrated increased student achievement. The AEI Literacy Coach is knowledgeable about reading and writing skills and is able to collaborate among teachers and administrators. This person communicates the components of the literacy plan. In order to support these additional responsibilities, they are provided with additional time.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Expert knowledge and skills in the area of critical thinking, reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing, Demonstrates excellence in teaching. Thorough knowledge of content curricula, assessment and instruction. Understanding of the middle school child. Ability to work well with teachers, parents and administrators. Ability to coach, model and build the knowledge and skills of teachers. Provide professional development to teachers in the area of literacy. Excellent skills in analysis and use of data to support instructional decisions and acceleration of students. Strong technology skills. Excellent organizational and management skills. Excellent oral, written communication, facilitation, interpersonal and collaboration skills. This position requires the knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Holds, from an accredited institution, a master's degree or its equivalent in semester hours of credit or is within one year of fulfilling this requirement. Completion of Skillful Teacher or OAT 1 within the year of attaining this position. Holds or is working toward certification as literacy professional preferred. Has had a minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience with one year in MCPS preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. SELECTION AND CONTINUANCE OF SERVICE:Shall be selected by the principal and a team that will include teachers from multiple content areas. EVALUATION:Will be evaluated using the standards of Teacher Professional Growth System.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets the appropriate Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for a middle school assignment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as the School Literacy Leader:
Models literacy practices, coaches¿ teachers on their implementation, and provides opportunities to engage in reflective discourse.

Provides feedback to teachers on instruction through peer observations and reflection to support teaching and learning

Supports the effective use of technology in the classroom, including integration of technology into instruction.

Collaborates to build teacher capacity in areas of:
- Increasing the depth of understanding of literacy practices and their relationship to contents and student achievement.
- Use of research-based instructional strategies
- Planning for and implementing differentiated lessons
- Effective use of student literacy data to inform instruction
- Examining student work to inform instruction
- Effective reading instruction

Participates in the school leadership team in planning a school-wide instructional and assessment program that provides consistency, continuity, and varied approaches to MCPS curriculum implementation appropriate for the strengths and needs of students.
- Monitors implementation of grading and reporting procedures
- Assists in hiring new teachers
- Assists in development of master schedule

Participates in the design, implementation and monitoring of the local school improvement plan

Collaborates with school leadership to identify, define, promote, support and evaluate school-wide literacy goals and plan.

In collaboration with school leadership, develops a long term plan with measurable benchmarks that will:
- Increase teacher knowledge of literacy skills and processes used to access the curriculum and assessment
- Support effective instructional strategies across content areas
- Increase student participation, particularly African American and Hispanic student participation, in accelerated and enriched courses
- Provide instructional, professional, and parental support for improvement of student achievement in accelerated and enriched courses
- Models effective literacy practices in professional development meetings

Assists in recommending literacy materials.

Participates in vertical articulation within grade levels and between schools.

Meets regularly with central office staff members to collaborate on school specific literacy goals

Promotes Success for Every Student:
As a member of the school leadership team, implements the school improvement plan with measurable benchmarks that will:
o Increase teacher knowledge of the content, curriculum, assessment and effective instructional strategies
o Increase student participation, particularly African American and Hispanic student participation, in accelerated and enriched courses
o Provide support for improvement of student achievement in accelerated and enriched courses
o Enhance partnerships with parents to support student achievement

Monitors and reports on a quarterly basis, student access and progress in rigorous courses.

Participates in developing and sharing a process for nurturing/mentoring underachieving and/or traditionally underserved students enrolled in accelerated courses.

Monitors assessment measures and interprets instructional data to promote individual student achievement

Collaborates in the communication with parents about:
- Program offerings and opportunities for acceleration, enrichment and support.
- Opportunities for all students to apply critical thinking skills and access rigorous instruction.
- Student placement in academically advanced courses.
- Student preparation for college success.
- Dissemination of cluster and system wide special program information

Assists in the coordination of magnet and special program applications and recommendations

Promotes Professionalism and Continuous Professional Development:

Attends professional development meetings collaboratively planned by OCIP and OOD to share with leadership to determine appropriate implementation.

Collaborates with the SDT, content specialist and classroom teachers to:
- Provide professional development that supports rigorous instruction and differentiation to improve student achievement
- Provide job-embedded professional development opportunities to improve teaching understanding of literacy and its use in the content areas

Dialogues with mentors and consulting teachers assigned to teachers when appropriate
