WORKING TITLE: Teacher, Auditory GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, provides direct educational services to deaf and hard of hearing students, particularly in the areas of language skills: listening comprehension, speech, speech reading, vocabulary, reading, and written expression; works closely with school staff toward successful mainstreaming of deaf and hard of hearing students to the greatest extent appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of specialized methods of teaching language, reading, writing, speech, speechreading, listening vocabulary, and concept development s to deaf and hard of hearing students. Thorough knowledge of unique social and emotional needs of deaf and hard of hearing students and their families. Ability to work with parents and other professionals and support personnel in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for each deaf and hard of hearing student. Fluency in sign language and/or cued speech skills preferred. Completion of MCPS Elementary Teacher Test, for self-contained positions. Completion of MCPS Secondary Teacher Test, for hearing impaired teacher position.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in deaf education; master's degree preferred. D/HOH Special Class and Resource Itinerant Teachers: At least 1-2 years successful classroom teaching experience preferred. D/HOH Toddler Teacher: At least 1-2 years successful experience working with infants and toddlers 0-3 years of age preferred.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland certification requirements for teachers of the hearing impaired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The D/HOH teacher provides a full educational program to deaf and hard of hearing students, preschool through high school, including all academic subjects, direct instruction in Reading/Language Arts, and integration of the highly specialized language and communication goals on the IEP.

The D/HOH Resource/Itinerant teacher provides services in the areas of language arts as well as specialized supports in selected academic subjects. Provides instruction in self-advocacy skills for deaf and hard of hearing students; provides on-going support and in-service training for general education staff in the effective use of accommodations, communication and instructional strategies appropriate for deaf and hard of hearing students.

The D/HOH Infant/Toddler teacher works closely with parents to help them understand and cope with the psychological, social, and educational impact of deafness; demonstrates how to provide a stimulating learning environment for the child; demonstrates effective techniques for communication and advises on the use of amplification systems for the child in conjunction with the educational audiologist and outside professionals; and provides direct intervention to the child in the areas of communication and socialization, including language development and maximum use of residual hearing.

D/HOH teachers must work closely with parents, supervisory personnel, general education school staff and D/HOH staff to support and enhance the development of deaf and hard of hearing students in order to reach their maximum potential.
