SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Performs technical and administrative support for assistive technology/augmentative communication equipment and services provided in the department of Student Services. The work of the class involves the operation, storage, maintenance and loan management of a variety of alternative & augmentative communication (AAC) devices and assistive technology (AT) equipment and software used by students throughout MCPS who are receiving InterACT services. Worker checks equipment in and out, keeps inventory records, sets up and programs equipment and demonstrates its operation to staff and families as needed. The equipment consists of voice output devices (such as Step by Step Communicators, TechSpeak, Springboard, DynaVox) and alternate computer/device input peripherals and software (such as joysticks, single switches, alternate keyboards, onscreen keyboards) and similar equipment. Position is located with the InterACT (Interdisciplinary Augmentative Communication and Technology) Team. Incumbent is expected to have the ability to perfonn the spectrum of technical duties and responsibilities encompassed in this classification as assigned, to learn the operation and use of new equipment as acquired, and to stay current with new technological developments in the area of assistive technology.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of programming a variety of voice output devices and customizing alternate access setups for computers and voice output devices, such as Dynavox family, Vantage, Vanguard, Springboard, ChatPC, ERICA devices and Mercury devices. Knowledge of the methods and techniques involved in the inspection, operation, cleaning, control and maintenance of a variety of AAC and AT equipment. Ability to provide information/consultation services and training and to assist in the development of adapted curriculum/instructional materials under the supervision of an InterACT Team professional. Ability to work effectively with InterACT Team members, school teams, families, company representatives and members of the community. Ability to operate, inspect, clean, maintain and control a variety of AAC/AT equipment. Ability to learn the technical characteristics and operation of new equipment. Ability to use computer applications such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets and multi-presentation software. Knowledge working with Boardmaker, Writing with Symbols 2000, Speaking Dynamically Pro, Intellitools Classroom Suite, Overlay Maker, SOLO, and/or Kurzweil. Skill in determining equipment operation problems. Ability to perform minor electronic repairs. Skill in instructing others in the operation and preparation of materials adapted for students with disabilities being served by the InterACT Team. Good communication and human relation skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Coursework and training in the areas of AAC/AT equipment and experience in programming and operating assistive technology. Experience working with students with disabilities preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Certificate in information technology desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move moderately heavy items and equipment; walking, stair climbing, moving equipment from room to room, climb ladders and work from high places.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Position may require use of personal vehicle to transport equipment and materials and/or perform maintenance/backup tasks.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Department of Student Services:

1. Operates, maintains, inspects, distributes and undertakes repairs on AAC/AT equipment in accordance with MCPS policies and procedures.

2. Support and program the following devices:DynaVox family, Vantage, Vanguard, Springborad, ChatPC, ERICA eye gaze system and mercury devices.

3. Manages the loan of AAC and AT equipment to students receiving InterACT services.

4. Provides technical support and instruction assistance to InterACT team members, school teams, families in the operation of AAC/AT equipment.

5. Modifies software programs to address the individual student needs as instructed by the staff professional.

6. Develop adapted curricular and communication materials to support the individual needs of the student.

7. Assists in ordering materials, supplies and equipment with approval of the InterACT Team Leader.

8. Maintains student and loan databases and generates reports as needed.

9. Enters relevant information into Special Education Data System (SEDS).Maintains current inventory on all AAC/AT equipment.

10. Performs related work as assigned.
