WORKING TITLE: Electronic Publishing Assistant GRADE: 16 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, provides graphic design publishing services using complex electronic publishing computers and related equipment. The work of the class involves operation of a sophisticated electronic publishing system and related equipment and devices in a multiprogramming environment. Employees lead administrative support personnel in the initial preparation of copy and art and are responsible for completing scheduled projects, taking actions on own initiative to maintain schedule, control quality and correct problems. Serious problems are referred to supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the practices and procedures of operating and maintaining electronic publishing computers and associated peripheral equipment and devices. Working knowledge of the care and handling of magnetic tapes, scanners, disks, and printers. Working knowledge of a variety of computer hardware and software and supplies and their use. Knowledge of basic programming concepts and data base management system concepts. Ability to operate a wide variety of computer related equipment with speed, efficiency, and economy. Ability to plan, instruct, coordinate, and work on individual jobs. Ability to recognize and correct design flaws, prepare or modify illustrations, and manipulate text using sophisticated hardware and software. Ability to follow complex instructions. Ability to work under tight schedules and deadlines with maximum efficiency. Considerable knowledge of business English, spelling, general vocabulary, punctuation and arithmetic. Knowledge of the general organization and functions of Montgomery County Public Schools. Ability to carry out details, to prepare camera ready art and make sound decisions. Ability to handle confidential information properly. Ability to transfer, convert, and design complex materials from individual departments and units. Good oral and written communication and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Training in electronic publishing and design. Considerable experience in electronic publishing including diagnosing and solving hardware/software problems. Copy editing and proofreading experience is required. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: None
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move heavy boxes and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds. Ability to work at a computer screen for long periods.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Occasional overtime required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Independently designs, illustrates, formats, copy edits, proofreads, and prepares for printing attractive and orderly informative publications, flyers, advertisements, letterheads, business cards, menus, newsletters, brochures, program schedules, etc., distributed for county-wide readership.

2. Ensures the proper input data is provided; diagnoses and solves operations problems; makes decisions regarding situations caused by hardware failure; assures that schedules are maintained and follows through on assigned projects.

3. Operates necessary computer equipment; powers the computer and related equipment up or down, inspects and prepares repro, film or galley run.

4. Calibrates equipment for film or paper.

5. Refers to technical manuals for reference and software responses.

6. Orients new workers to procedures and standards of the MCPS publications and instructs existing workers on new procedures.

7. Performs related work as required.
