WORKING TITLE: Senior SQL Server Database Architect/Engineer GRADE: 27 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Responsible for the implementation of moderate to large scale SQL SERVER database solutions to include architecture/design, installation, configuration, integrity, security, and maintenance. Responsibilities include delivery and administration of physical DBMS solutions that support MCPS enterprise application systems with accuracy, efficiency, and appropriate user, role, and application access. Helps with the evaluation, planning, and implementation of new database hardware/software and provides for staff training; responsible for data security, integrity, backup procedures and standards. Also contributes to the definition and enforcement of standards for security. Works with other DBAs, infrastructure and operations engineers, and development teams to architect, create, populate and administer SQL Server DBMS resources. In addition, is responsible for monitoring, researching, recommending, and implementing optimization/tuning strategies for efficient database, schema, and query resources and underlying infrastructure. Coordinates DBMS and database research and development efforts for DIO. These efforts include: evaluation and recommendation of new tools, software, techniques, migrations, upgrades, training, development of standards, implementation, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive MS SQL Server database administration experience. Knowledge of current network technologies. Knowledge of data security and relational integrity issues and methods. Experience working with data development teams. Advanced working knowledge of Windows Server management and overall server and DBMS/database-dependent hardware configuration. A solutions engineering mindset, the ability to visualize the ¿big picture¿ of cross-organization architecture, with Enterprise systems data is desired; this includes roles, identity, synchronization, periodicity, inter- and intra-database relationships, as well as, authoritative source of overlapping/related/intersecting data across the Enterprise. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer science or related field is strongly desired. Considerable experience in the area of database design and administration of SQL SERVER databases. Advanced experience in database monitoring, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and high availability strategies for SQL Server DBMS. Demonstrated experience in solving complex database administration challenges and issues. Experience in the design and development of applications in a client/server environment and with the development of Web applications, Java, and the management of Web Servers is desirable. Knowledge of PowerShell and .Net platform with SQL is a plus. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Microsoft Certified Database Administrator highly desired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Positions are required to operate workstations for sustained periods of time.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work non-compensated overtime, especially during peak periods and when urgent work requirements exist.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Working under the leadership of the DIO director.2. Works with technology delivery teams and engineers to architect DBMS/database environments/solutions, monitor and analyze database performance, identifies issues/potential areas for performance improvement, and researches, recommends, and implements actions as appropriate. 3. Develops and enforces standards for database security, application security, database backup and recovery, database element and table definition. 4. Keeps up to date on DBMS/database technology.5. Directs new database infrastructure (hardware/software/storage/backups/redundancy) evaluation, planning, and implementation. 6. Determines time schedule and develops plan for implementation of new DBMS software releases. 7. SQL Server DBMS/database Performance Monitoring, Tuning and Optimization 8. Directs and participates in research and development efforts involving new technologies, application development tools, software products and training for possible use by MCPS. 9. Defining hardware requirements and storage capacity planning for development, testing, QA and production for capacity planning and performance 10. Makes decisions involving changes to logical or physical database structures to improve efficiency or correct problems. 11. Plans and manages the development of required interfaces to allow purchased applications software to operate efficiently and accurately in MCPS¿ SQL Server DBMS environment. 12. Keeps up to date on network technologies and MCPS network architecture in particular. 13. Works with WAN engineering and client-server development groups to collaborate and decide on issues related to deployment of large-scale SQL SERVER database and client-server applications in a network environment. 14. Works with other DBAs to design efficient data warehouse and/or data mart architectures. 15. Manages the creation, population and administration of MCPS data warehouse(s) and/or data mart(s) supporting organizational data mining and transformation. 16. Develops standards for its data, security and user access privileges. 17. Performs related duties as required
