Environmental Specialist, Indoor Air Quality Specialist

WORKING TITLE: Environmental Specialist, Indoor Air Quality Specialist GRADE: 23 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, participates in indoor air quality evaluations examining facilities to determine levels of contamination. Investigates problems and compliance with environmental health regulations, requirements and preventative maintenance standards. Compiles and analyzes investigative reports and related records to show compliance with the MCPS safety and environmental health program. Participates in required training. Provides health and safety support for the division.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of occupational safety principles, accident investigation techniques and environmental factors. Knowledge of relevant county, state and federal laws, standards and regulations. Ability to conduct environmental health and safety investigations and propose solutions to problems identified. Ability to prepare and analyze complex and detailed reports. Ability to read architectural plans and blueprints to evaluate compliance with applicable laws, codes and standards related to OSHA, NFPA, EPA and HVAC systems. Ability to use personal computer to input data and generate reports needed to verify compliance with required standards and the indoor air quality and safety programs. Possess the supervisory skills needed to lead work teams. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree required. College major in occupational safety and health or a related scientific field with at least four semester-hours in chemistry or related health courses or course work in scientific disciplines applicable to the field of occupational safety and environmental health. Three years experience in occupational safety and environmental health investigations including confined space entry, indoor air quality and other related areas. Experience in work related to employee, student and facility property safety, preferably in a school setting. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelors degree, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class C driver's license or equivalent. Asbestos/AHERA certification desired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to work in dirty, dusty and uncomfortable conditions involving considerable walking, climbing and carrying test equipment. Work may require use of respiratory protection gear/equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Use of personal vehicle and availability to respond to emergencies.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Participate in indoor air quality investigations.

2. Prepare recommendations for control and remediation of indoor air quality problems.

3. Interpret technical reports, serious incident reports and environmental test data.

4. Monitor compliance with requisite laws, regulations and standards.

5. Prepare reports documenting compliance with regulations and standards.

6. Work collaboratively with other indoor air quality team members planning and managing the indoor air quality team's work schedules and activities.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.
