WORKING TITLE: Roof Construction Specialist GRADE: 22 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs highly responsible technical work in designing roofs and roof replacements, supervising roof installation, and administering roof construction contracts and warranties. Work involves responsibility for the application of advanced knowledge of roof design, technology, installation, and maintenance. Employees in this class are required to exercise independent judgment and initiative in developing work methods, remaining thoroughly familiar with the latest in roofing technology, and administering contracts. The nature of the work involves responsible contacts with architects, engineers, contractors, principals, manufacturers, and roofing associations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of roof systems, including roof design, AutoCAD roof design technology, installation, guarantees and warranties administration and maintenance practices. Ability to apply this knowledge to diversified school projects with particular emphasis on reroofing existing facilities. Demonstrated ability to review and prepare plans and specifications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with architects, engineers, contractors, manufacturers representatives, and school staff. Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and initiative in developing work methods and resolving roof problems. Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree required. College major in architecture, architectural engineering, structural engineering or a related field preferred. Extensive experience in roof design, installation and reroofing of large commercial/institutional type buildings. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelors degree, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to work in inclement weather and to perform work involving activities and hazards common to roofing work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to travel to construction and school sites on unscheduled basis. Ability to respond to emergency roof problems at any time and to work overtime.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepares and updates Montgomery County Public Schools roof specifications.

2. Advises architects/engineers on roof design requirements of MCPS.

3. Identifies, in conjunction with Division of Maintenance staff, in priority order, schools which require roof replacement.

4. Prepares budget request for roof replacement.

5. Prepares bid packages including drawings and specifications for roof replacement.

6. Assists in contract award.

7. Supervises roof installation on a daily basis, assuring materials, supplies, and workmanship meet all specifications.

8. Administers roof installation contracts.

9. Administers roof guarantees and/or warranties.

10. Maintains records of all facility roof data.

11. Advises principals on corrective actions being taken and establishes a system to report and correct problems.

12. Maintains coordination with appropriate staff in the Division of Maintenance.

13. Maintains thorough knowledge of current roof technology, design and installation techniques.

14. Performs other related work as required.
