WORKING TITLE: Professional Library Assistant GRADE: 12 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs a variety of duties helping teachers, administrators, community members and other patrons find needed information providing services such as conducting and assisting with information searches, coordinating the interlibrary loan service, copying journal articles, maintaining the Professional Library catalog of materials and monitoring the operation of computers, copiers, and other equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of manual and computerized research tools including the Internet, on-line resources, the Professional Library periodical and reference collections, and CD-ROMs; proficient with word processing, databases, spreadsheets, e-mail, and on-line ordering; ability to operate and troubleshoot a variety of computers, printers, copiers, and other equipment; knowledge of library procedures, methods, terminology, routines and techniques. Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions; ability to assist patrons in locating appropriate materials; excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Successful completion of the MCPS typing test required. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Completion of 30 semester hours of college course work and/or one year of successful experience in a public or school library/media center if no associates degree. Experience in using computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, and the Internet. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to an Associates degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: None
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to lift and move books, periodicals, and other objects weighing up to 30 lbs. Physical demands include stooping, bending, standing, and operating keyboard devices for extended periods of time.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists patrons including teachers, administrators, and community members with information searches.

2. Coordinates the interlibrary loan service for all of MCPS.

3. Checks in and processes periodicals, books, and newspapers,

4. Maintains accurate lists of new microfilm and periodicals.

5. Weeds old journals from shelves.

6. Prepares the library's widely distributed periodical holdings list.

7. Maintains monthly statistics for books processed, computer use, interlibrary loan, microfilm/microfiche use, reader/printer use and auditrons from copy machines.

8. Maintains the Library's catalog (Enters materials into the collection, downloads from The Library Catalog, catalogs at Media Processing using the Library of Congress MARC records, readies materials for shelving, makes any cataloging or editing changes, withdraws outdated materials, inventories the collection).

9. Prepares the Professional Library order forms with information from the curriculum librarian and publishers.

10. Monitors and troubleshoots the Professional Library's Winnebago/Spectrum program, generating reports as needed.

11. Troubleshoots equipment such as copiers, reader/printers, and computers.

12. Orders furniture, equipment, supplies, and database subscriptions, and maintains stocks.

13. Sorts mail and vendor catalogs, prepares routine correspondence, gathers data for and helps produce periodic reports, creates and maintains various databases.

14. Reconciles financial data related to several Professional Library accounts.

15. Performs related work as required.
