WORKING TITLE: Curriculum Librarian GRADE: 23 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs professional librarian work in the Professional Library. Work of the class involves planning and administering the program of the Professional Library. The worker trains and supervises staff in the library, develops budget requests and determines library budget allocations, evaluates and selects materials and equipment for the collection, provides reference services, and conducts user orientation and instruction programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of library principles, procedures, methods, practices and materials. Thorough knowledge of reference sources and tools of research. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with MCPS staff and to provide advisory and consulting services to library patrons. Excellent human relations and communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Masters degree required. College major in library science. Considerable experience in information retrieval via computer. Experience in research in the field of education. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a masters degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work evenings, weekends and overtime as required by library schedules and work requests.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Reviews professional books and periodicals to determine what materials are or will be needed by staff in the school system.

2. Conducts online computer searches of numerous data bases.

3. Prepares or supervises the preparation of bibliographies.

4. Instructs employees and other on how to use library resources and equipment.

5. Writes reports. Assists Board of Education members, administrative staff, teachers, and support personnel in locating research materials.

6. Supervises library staff in the daily conduct and functions of the Professional Library, including preparation of orders for books, periodicals and microforms; the maintenance of records and statistics; the dissemination of library materials; and the provision of reference and information services.

7. Performs related duties and required.
