SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the director of Food and Nutrition Services (DFNS), this position will play a leading role on the MCPS Wellness Committee and be an active member of the School Health Council, as well as other wellness-related County committees, such as the Obesity Prevention Committee, and provide guidance and expertise in the nutritional regulations for Child Nutrition Programs and in food ingredient interactions. Plans and implements training programs for division staff as well as MCPS staff regarding wellness. provides guidance, training and expertise in the nutritional regulations for Child Nutrition Programs and in food ingredient interactions (food allergies). Plans, develops, coordinates, and implements a comprehensive training program designed to maintain, and/or improve knowledge and skills for employees in DFNS. The employee in this class is responsible for formulating and implementing a broad training program that meets immediate needs, as well as, long-range needs of the division. Training provided for food service staff, all DFNS employees, CPF staff, school staff, summer school staff, parents, students, and community on health and nutrition to insure program compliance. Training sessions will be designed specifically for the target audience. Food service staff training includes USDA compliance in serving school meals, a la carte options, wellness requirements, operation of large scale food equipment and install computer applications. Supports the goals and objectives of the division and performs a critical leadership role in coordinating the activities as outlined in JPG-RA Wellness: Physical and Nutritional Health. This position will collaborate with the Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO), the Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs (OCIP), the Office of School Performance (OSP), and the Office of Information and Family Outreach.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of nutrition as it relates to the health and wellbeing of children, adolescents, and adults. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local guidelines and regulations related to food service, nutrition and food technology. Ability to prepare and deliver training programs. Strong communication and human relations skills. Ability to develop and present nutrition programs for small and large groups. Thorough knowledge of institutional food service procedures, practices, and equipment; thorough knowledge of MCPS food service operations. Ability to train and advice school-based and division personnel; Ability to administer food service programs including supervision and instruction of employees. Ability to develop effective working relationships with administrators, school staffs, parents, and others. Ability to train cafeteria personnel in nutritional requirements of food service programs and Microsoft Office skills required. Database skills desirable. Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree required. University degree in dietetics, nutrition, food service management, or a related field. Coursework in dietetics, sanitation, nutrition, or food service management required. Experience using advanced Microsoft Office software required. Experience presenting informational/training programs to a diverse audience required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Registered Dietitian, by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics required. Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial class C driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring sustained moderate physical effort, movement of objects weighing 40-60 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Use of personal car required. Evening and weekend work may be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in training to instructional staff provided by OCIP to integrate nutrition and wellness in the curriculum.

Provides classroom instruction, as requested.

Provides training expertise to MCPS schools and offices regarding wellness.
Participates in the testing of new products to be served or used in schools. Provides professional development to MCPS staff on wellness and nutrition.

Oversees the implementation and adherence to the BOE adopted nutritional standards for foods and beverages available for sale to students from midnight until the end of the instructional day.

Writes newsletter items for MCCPTA, EAP, school principals, OCOO, Office of Communications and Family Outreach.

Presents information at various meetings as requested.

Routinely meets with students groups to gather information on customer satisfaction with the meals program.

Provides support to schools as they implement JPG-RA.

Oversees the training parameters of the food service programs to assure adherence to federal, state, and county regulations applicable to the school food service program.

Conducts sites visits to determine training needs and develops specific training sessions for, schools, offices, and/or community. Plans and coordinates training meetings.

Develops lesson plans, training schedules, agenda, and handouts, schedules classroom meeting sites, advertises training schedule, and invites guest speakers as the need arises and reviews and revises current training materials as needed.

Determines frequency of course presentation, prerequisites for attendance, duration of course, class size, and methods of instruction, reference materials, and course goals. Maintains and updates resource library materials for school and office staff reference.

May assist/oversee the uniform program including specifications, orders, receipt, storage and distribution to all personnel.

Works closely with leadership to learn of new training requirements for DFNS personnel.

Assists in Food Service (FS)/Cafeteria manager training regarding nutrition food safety, program compliance, and customer service.

Provides technical assistance to FS/cafeteria managers regarding nutrition, product quality, and operation of all equipment.

Responds to inquires/concerns from community, school/office staff and student groups.

Develops nutrient and allergen information for use by parents of student with special nutritional needs.

Performs related work as required.
