WORKING TITLE: Integrated Pest Management Associate I GRADE: 13 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs routine, responsible pest management work in the control and extermination of a variety of pests including, termites, rodents, insects, wildlife, poisonous weeds, etc. The work involves identifying the existence and type of pests, instituting appropriate control measures in accordance with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques and practices, and applying, in a safe and efficient manner, pesticides as required. After an initial familiarization period, employees in this class are expected to work with a minimum of supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the basic practices, equipment, chemical substances and safety precautions used in pest control. Working knowledge of pest management techniques and practices that are environmentally sound (e.g., Integrated Pest Management). Basic knowledge of construction practices. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and prepare written reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate pest control practices. Ability to inspect premises and structural foundations to determine existence and identity of pests, the extent of damage, and need for repair. Ability to exercise extreme caution in the use of toxic substances. Ability to work independently and follow a prescribed schedule. Good interpersonal skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required Three (3) years work experience in the detection and control of a variety of pests. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) pest control applicator certification in Category VII-A (general), VII-B (termite), VII-C (bird), VII-D (rodent), valid Class C Maryland drivers license or equivalent.s license or equivalent
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring walking long distance, crawling, bending, climbing and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs. Ability to complete the physical requirements specified in 20 Code of Federal regulations 1910.134, and to wear respiratory protection. Ability to use equipment geared toward pest management, such as; hammer drill, 50 gal. spray rig, backpack sprayer, etc.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspects MCPS facilities on a regular basis to identify and verify the presence of pests.

Implements IPM practices and techniques at facility sites.

Communicates pest management control practices to maintenance and school staff and makes recommendations regarding the elimination and control of pests.

Determines areas to be treated with chemicals, drills and repair holes in concrete for termite treatments, and makes follow-up visits to determine treatment effectiveness.

Inspects all areas within facilities, including structural foundations for damage, and determine the extent of damage and need for repair.

Maintains records and prepares reports of work accomplished.

Prepares written materials and places signs as required to notify building occupants of pesticide applications.

Performs related work as required.
