SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs unskilled and semiskilled work in the repair and maintenance of roofs and in the installation of related sheet metal fixtures. Work in this class requires a basic knowledge of the methods and tools of the roofing, carpentry and sheet metal trades and a high degree of agility and manipulative skill. Employees in this class initially perform the unskilled tasks associated with roof maintenance and repair; as experience is gained, they may be assigned to relatively more difficult tasks of a semiskilled nature. Specific work instructions are received for each job; however, constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive aspects of the work. Work involves exposure to accident and injury hazards and occasionally to inclement weather.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of the MCPS Roof Maintenance Worker written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Some knowledge of the methods and tools of the carpentry trade; some knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools common to roofing, carpentry and sheet metal trades. Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in the repair and replacement of roofs; ability to work on building roofs in a safe and efficient manner. Some skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials of the roofing trade. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience performing semiskilled manual work requiring agility and manipulative skill. Roofing application training. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C drivers license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform strenuous physical work, lift heavy objects up to 100 lbs., climb and work from building roofs, and work during periods of adverse weather conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Successful completion of the MCPS Roof Maintenance Worker written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Ability to respond to emergency work requests. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Evaluates roofs, drains for repair or replacement.

Assists supervisor, roof mechanic, contractors, PLAR/Contract Office, and manufactures to evaluate existing roofs.

Perform test cuts and other tests to determine repair needed.

Coordinates with other departments (HVAC, plumbing, boiler trades), in evaluating the cause of leaks or to repair natural or man-made damages. Repairs leaking or otherwise defective roofs by clearing affected areas.

Fills cracks or holes with cement and membrane, covers with hot pitch, and then covers entire area with slag.

Makes minor carpentry repairs to damaged portions of roofs.

Rebuilds roofs, using basefelt tar, gravel, pitch slag, and other roofing material.

Follows oral instructions and/or sketches or diagrams, cuts, solders and installs gutters, downspouts, and other sheet metal fixtures on roofs.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
