Roof Mechanic

WORKING TITLE: Roof Mechanic GRADE: 15 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of roofs and in the installation of related sheet metal fixtures. Work in this class requires knowledge of methods and tools of the roofing, carpentry and sheet metal trades and a variety of roof covering materials and the procedures for installation. Work involves the inspection of damaged or worn roofs and determination of time and materials needed to repair or replace roofs. Work involves exposure to accident and injury hazards and occasionally to inclement weather.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of the MCPS Roof Mechanic written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools of the roofing trade; considerable knowledge of carpentry maintenance and repair procedures, with particular reference to roof construction; working knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and tools of the sheet metal trade. Ability to repair, maintain, and rebuild roofs and related fixtures; ability to work from sketches and plans; ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials; ability to work on building roofs in a safe and efficient manner. Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the roofing trade. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in the performance of skilled work in the maintenance, installation, and repair of roofs. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Agility and ability to climb and work on building roofs. Sufficient physical strength and stamina to handle roofing materials and carry out repair activities. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions, and to work safely with hot asphalt materials.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to respond to emergency work requests. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Completes work orders related to leaks or other defects of roofs.

2. Assist supervisor, contractors, PLAR/Contract Office and manufactures to evaluate existing roofs. Perform test cuts and other tests to determine repair needed.

3. Coordinate with other departments (Electric, HVAC, plumbing, boiler trades), in evaluating the cause of leaks or to repair natural or man-made damages.

4. Clears affected surface, fills cracks or holes with cement and membrane, covers with hot pitch and then covers entire area with slag.

5. Makes extensive carpentry repairs to severely damaged roofs.

6. Rebuilds roofs, using basefelt tar, gravel, pitch, slag, and other materials.

7. Makes repairs to damaged sections.

8. Lays out, cuts, solders, and installs gutters, downspouts, and other sheet metal fixtures.

9. Reads and interpretes sketches and diagrams as needed.

10. Performs related work as required.
