WORKING TITLE: Glazier GRADE: 15 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled glazing and related carpentry work. Work of the class involves repairing, installing, and fabricating glass in schools and other assigned facilities. Workers repair and construct metal and wood sashes and hardware; install and repair constructional steel and store front glazing insulation of windows; remove and install glass in windows, skylights, greenhouses, display cases, and table tops. Workers apply knowledge of accepted techniques, standards, and codes related to glass removal, repair, and installation including related safety methods and procedures to avoid injury to themselves and to others. Employees install window air conditioners and carpentry work as necessary and as assigned. Assignments are received in the form of work orders or oral instructions from a carpenter supervisor who inspects the completed work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Completion of the MCPS Glazier Skills Test at the required score. Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and practices of the trade; considerable knowledge of use, properties and qualities of many kinds of glass. Knowledge of window hardware and window frame construction. Knowledge of and ability to work safely with and around hazardous materials. Ability to plan, lay out, and perform glazier work at a skilled, full performance level; ability to use and maintain the more common tools and equipment used in glass installation and replacement. Skill in use of tools and equipment of the glazier and related carpentry trades. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience as a glazier or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the glazing trade. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to lift and move heavy objects while walking over uneven terrain, climb ladders to second or third level windows and/or to roofs; crouch, stoop, and bend regularly and to perform similar tasks requiring strenuous physical effort.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Some work overtime as required to respond to emergencies. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required. Completion of the MCPS Glazier Skills Test at the required score.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspects jobs and determines appropriate materials and resources needed to complete the work. In cooperation with supervisor and building staff plans work and schedules to ensure the safety and security of buildings.

Removes broken panes and clean sashes using appropriate tools such as chisels, screwdrivers, propane torches and a variety of power tools for cutting, polishing and shaping glass and metal.

Replaces and secures glass panes of all sizes with variety of fasteners.

Makes showcase doors; sizes and edges glass, cuts and polishes glass, and drills as required.

Modifies window frames and hardware as necessary to fit a variety of types and sizes of glass and to accept air conditioners.

Fabricates thermal panes, window hardware and other materials as required.

Reviews and makes recommendations concerning new materials and techniques.

Coordinates work with other trades and building users.

Drives a truck and ensure truck is kept properly supplied with tools and materials.

Secures work area to avoid injury to self and to others.

Works safely around hazardous materials and escalates issues to supervisor as needed.

Performs related work as required.
