WORKING TITLE: Mason GRADE: 15 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the placing of bricks blocks, and mortar and in finishing cement surfaces for a variety of construction, alteration, and repair projects. Assignments in masonry range from routine cement-finishing jobs to brick laying and tile setting which require considerable skill in layouts. Employees in this class are also required to perform incidental carpentry and maintenance mechanic duties. Incumbents in this class may supervise and direct the work of a small group of laborers and maintenance workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and practices of the masonry trade; considerable knowledge of methods of general construction and of concrete and mortar mixes. Ability to work from diagrams, make measurements and set up forms preparatory to pouring and finishing; ability to supervise a small group of general maintenance workers. Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Completion of a mason apprenticeship required. Experience in a wide variety of concrete and brick masonry repair and construction work required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class D driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring considerable physical exertion, bending, stooping, and lifting of moderately heavy objects. Ability to work from scaffolding of considerable height.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) (Frequent overtime, night work, weekend work, etc.)Ability to work overtime as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Cuts and lays brick for small building additions, partitions, and incinerators; spreads and shapes mortar between layers of brick; lays cinderblock for retaining walls; establishes and checks vertical and horizontal alignment of structures with gauge line, level, and plumb bob.

2. Builds or places forms for steps, curbs, sidewalks, small foundations, and other work; finishes surfaces by smoothing the concrete to a level plane; patches new and old work where holes have developed; supervises the work of a small group of general maintenance workers who mix and pour cement and perform the rough manual duties. Installs glass blocks and ceramic wall tile; may do general carpentry work, including fixing doors and windows and building shelves and partitions.
