OFFICIAL TITLE: Firebrick Repairer CODE: 8950 SQ/OQ: Senior Qualified
WORKING TITLE: Insulator GRADE: 14 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, repairs or replaces firebrick and refractory tile, and packs insulation such as asbestos, into casings or linings of heating equipment such as furnaces, boilers and ovens. Work in this class includes inspection of work site to determine time and materials needed, removal of burned or damaged material, and repair of furnace or boiler by laying new brick or tile or by using fire clay or other refractory material. The work usually requires disassembly of burners and gaskets. Assignments are normally received in the form of work orders, but incumbents may initiate work based on routine periodic inspections of heating facilities. Employees inspect own work for conformance with established standards. Work involves considerable lifting, prolonged standing, and some exposure to accident hazards; workers work in dirty, dark small crawl spaces. Completed work is inspected by heating supervisor for conformance with established safety standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: This position requires knowledge of all of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS) to include commitment to students, knowledge of job, professionalism, interpersonal, communication, organization, and problem solving.Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment of the trade. Considerable knowledge of the properties of the various firebrick and refractory materials; knowledge of the principles of refractory work. Knowledge of boiler operation. Ability to detect defective interiors of heating equipment; ability to estimate time and materials needed; ability to supervise and direct the efforts of one or more assistants; ability to read and work accurately from blueprints, schematic drawings, and detailed specifications. Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools, equipment, and materials of the firebrick and refractory trade.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of the tenth school grade and either considerable increasingly responsible on-the-job training or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade, and experience in the trade. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class D driver's license and a valid commercial driver's license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform sustained strenuous work, lift and move heavy objects, and work in cramped areas. Frequent climbing of ladders.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to respond to emergency work requirements.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Removes burned or damaged brick, tile, or other refractory and cleans surface of setting, using sledge, hammer, pry bar, scraper, and wire brush.

2. Lays firebrick and refractory tile to build, rebuild, reline, or patch boilers, furnaces, ovens, and similar heating equipment.

3. Cuts firebrick and refractories to size and shape determined by specifications, using circular abrasive or diamond-tipped saw.

4. Lays out and marks reference points to setting, using role, plumb bob, tape, level, and square. Calculates angles and courses for building walls, arches, columns, comers, and bottoms.

5. Mixes fire-clay mortar to specifications and spreads it with trowel, laying fire brick in place. Spreads or sprays refractories over exposed bricks to protect them against deterioration by heat.

6. Positions or bends special frame or hanger over casings to lay arches.

7. Cuts, notches, or drills openings to provide outlets, pyrometer mountings, brackets, and heating elements, using hand tools; to specifications, builds up and shapes cone around burner nozzle using special clay.

8. May supervise one or more general maintenance workers or heating service workers in performing nontechnical phases of work.

9. Performs related work as required.
