Mechanical Systems Technician Apprentice

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled work in servicing and repairing heating and ventilation systems, air conditioning systems and/or boilers. For HVAC Apprentice - the work of the class involves maintaining a wide variety of HVAC systems in schools and other facilities while working with a certified trainer. HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) combines sheet metal and electrical work involving installation, wiring, service and repair of environmental control systems and the fabrication and installation of ductwork. For Boiler Apprentice - the work of the class involves maintaining and repairing stationary boilers and boiler associated equipment, using hand tools and portable power tools. Cleaning boilers and auxiliary equipment, using scrapers, wire brushes and cleaning solvent. In addition, they inspect and repair boiler fittings, such as safety valves, regulators and plates. Boiler repairers may fabricate parts to make repairs and may remove and replace defective firebrick.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Fundamental knowledge and skill of electrical and mechanical components and functions of HVAC systems and/or boilers. Completion of certified heat pump courses preferred. Basic awareness of tools associated with the trade. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. The apprenticeship program combines both the on-the-job experience and classroom related training instruction over a period of four years. A minimum of 144 hours of classroom training and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training per year is required for four years. Demonstrate common use of math (including algebra or equivalent), reading, writing, and the ability to communicate clearly. required. The apprentice must be able to use correctly and safely all tools associated with the trade. The apprentice must be able to comprehend written, verbal, and visual directions. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class C non-commercial driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) The work is done indoors and outdoors. Work spaces can range from outdoor scaffolding (roof) to crawl spaces inside a wall. Ability to lift and carry 100+ pounds. Work is often in close and confined spaces and often requires the use of potentially dangerous equipment such as torches and power grinders. The work is physically demanding and dirty.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) For HVAC apprentice - possess current EPA Certification in refrigerant recovery methods and systems or be eligible for within 6 months of hire. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to take classes two nights a week and/or Saturdays.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. HVAC Apprentice diagnoses and repairs/replaces HVAC systems.

2. Interprets instructions, drawings, and specifications.

3. Tests and calibrates equipment and systems.

4. Performs preventive maintenance (PM) on HVAC equipment.

5. Understands and uses HVAC tools, instruments and devices properly.

6. Observes safety precautions.

7. Uses building automation control systems properly.

8. Evaluates/repairs general electrical problems.

9. Boiler Apprentice maintains boilers and equipment to supply and maintain heat or steam for buildings, marine vessels, or operation of pneumatic tools.

10. Provides preventive maintenance (PM) and repair for heating and steam boilers and equipment, using hand tools.

11. Records test results on specified form and gives to worker or supervisor.

12. Fabricates or repairs plumbing systems using mechanical means or welding.

13. Tests sample quality to ensure sample meets specifications, using testing devices.

14. Moves controls and observes gauges to regulate heat and steam.

15. Installs burners and auxiliary equipment, using hand tools.

16. Obtains samples from designated location on boiler and carries samples to testing laboratory.

17. Maintains and repairs water circulating pumps.

18. Performs related work as required.
