WORKING TITLE: Auto Service Worker (Shift 3) GRADE: 08 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, services and assists in the maintenance and mechanical repairs of school buses and other automotive equipment. Employees in this class perform routine tasks in servicing automotive equipment with lubricants, accessories, and simple parts, and also perform general custodial duties at the garage or assist in the transportation parts room -receiving and issuing stock.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of the MCPS Auto Service Worker written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Drug test is also required. Working knowledge of the standard methods, tools, and equipment used in servicing automotive equipment; some knowledge of the mechanical parts, fuel, and hydraulic systems of a variety of automotive equipment; working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to understand and fellow oral and written instructions; ability to operate a variety of automotive equipment. Applicants may be required to demonstrate possession of the basic competencies needed to perform effectively in this position. Ability to perform work demonstrating the core competencies described in the Supporting Services Professional Growth System: commitment to students, knowledge of job, professionalism, interpersonal communication and organizational skills, and problem solving competencies. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of the ninth grade required. High School or GED diploma preferred. Some experience in the servicing and maintenance of automotive equipment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland state noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent. Ability to secure a Maryland state commercial Class B driver's license, or equivalent, with air brake and passenger/cargo endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift objects up to 100 lbs; stand for extended periods of time, and complete work requiring considerable physical exertion. Exposure to inclement weather is possible.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime as required. Possession of a set of automotive service worker tools, as specified.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lubricates buses, automobiles, and trucks; fills gas tanks, services vehicles with oil and antifreeze, and checks air pressure in tires.

Answers road calls of disabled vehicles, changes tires, charges batteries, and makes minor emergency repairs; makes shop repairs to damaged tires.

Replaces mufflers, tail pipes, hoses, light bulbs, windshield wipers and fan belts; steam cleans engines.

Assists mechanic in body and fender repair and paint work; applies stencils to vehicles.

Assists mechanic in the relining of brakes by pulling wheels, replacing grease seals and bleeding brake systems.

Assists mechanic in tuning engines by replacing spark plugs and other components, cleaning air filters and adjusting carburetors.

Receives and issues parts, supplies, and tools; sweeps. garage floor and premises; cleans and replaces tools and equipment.

Performs related work as required.
