WORKING TITLE: Transportation Bus Operator I GRADE: 13 MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, operates a school bus in transporting children to and from schools. Employees in this class are responsible for following an assigned route and schedule in the safe and efficient operation of a school bus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Can read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries and to entries on reports and records. (Section 391.11 Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations) Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents. Knowledge of basic arithmetic. Working mechanical knowledge of school bus in order to complete pre-trip and post-trip inspection of equipment as required by commercial driver¿s license requirements, and ability to meet all pre-service training and testing requirements. Knowledge of the local street and road system of Montgomery County; knowledge of state regulations and laws pertaining to the operation of school buses; ability to interact positively with, gain respect of, and maintain discipline over student passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled and not distracting to safe driving; knowledge of safe, proper, and courteous motor vehicle operating procedures; Ability to operate a school bus transporting students in a safe, proper, and courteous manner. Ability to read, write, and communicate orally, understand and carry out written and oral instructions, maintain effective control over groups of children and work harmoniously with children and others. Ability to read and follow a road map. Ability to drive any size or type school bus in the fleet. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED required. Three years of successful automobile driving experience with a good driving record. Satisfactory completion of a prescribed pre-service instruction program within a reasonable period of time. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of or ability to obtain a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver¿s License (air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements), or equivalent within the period of time specified by the pre-service training program. certification in First aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures desired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to meet prescribed pre-employment and annual physical examination and testing requirements. Ability to complete pre- and post-trip bus inspections. Ability to lift heavy objects 50 lb minimum. Must be able to sit for long period of time in the bus driver¿s seat, reach the steering wheel and pedals, and wear the seat belt properly every day.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to meet Maryland State Department of Education requirements for continued employment, as prescribed by state laws and regulations and Montgomery County Public Schools policies. Must pass drug and alcohol testing. Ability to work overtime to complete required bus routes/trips. No more than two current points on the driving record and a satisfactory past driving record.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates a school bus in transporting children to and from schools; may transport students on field trips and outings.

May transport wheelchair bound students; assists such students in boarding bus; lifts and places wheelchairs in bus in secure position; transports student¿s medical apparatus.

Keeps confidential student medical information.

Must be a team player.

Assists or serves as the bus attendant when necessary.

Operates vehicle in compliance with state and county laws and departmental regulations.

Takes all precautions to avoid accidents.

Creates a positive, pleasant and safe environment for all passengers.

Tactfully maintains order among students aboard school bus and reports cases of misbehavior to school officials.

Interacts in a positive manner with the school administrators to extend the classroom to the school bus.

Responsible for cleaning inside and outside of assigned vehicle.

Assists students who become ill; cleans up as required.

Completes pre- and post-trip inspections of bus. Checks fuel, oil and water daily. Responsible for appearance of assigned vehicle and for reporting mechanical defects upon detection to repair shop.

Keeps records of operation of bus and submits required reports; compiles and submits accident report information and reports prolonged traffic delays.

Attends safety meetings.

Performs related work as required.
