WORKING TITLE: Transportation Bus Route Supervisor (BRS) GRADE: 17 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general direction, supervises an assigned set of bus operators and attendants throughout the year to include, recruiting, staffing, evaluating, developing and recognizing. Supervises the day-to-day operations of an assigned team to include school year and summer operations. Takes responsibility for overall team and individual team member performance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the local street and road system. Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents. Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies and guides that govern school transportation. Knowledge of bus route coordination and dispatching. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others and to effectively coordinate the completion of regularly assigned bus routes. Ability to instruct bus operators/attendants in the safe operation of buses and to implement safe driving practices and procedures. Ability to maintain records and complete reports. Ability to operate a school bus in the safe and efficient transportation of children. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED diploma required. College courses in transportation, management, or other related field desirable. Experience as a school bus operator. Bus route dispatching, coordination, or supervision experience desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of or ability to obtain a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver¿s License (air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements), or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to meet prescribed pre-employment and annual physical examination and testing requirements for bus operator I.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Must be willing to work irregular hours during peak periods and emergencies. Use of annual leave will be restricted on school days, and will be required on many non-school days (winter and spring break, report card days, etc.). Must maintain certification as a Maryland school bus operator.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Observes bus operators/attendants within assigned cluster, ensuring conformity to safe driving practices, established routes, and prescribed schedules.

2. Completes assigned run each day and fills in other runs as needed.

3. Operates a bus in unusual or emergency situations.

4. Maintains an on-the-road presence at all assigned schools and service areas in the assigned set of clusters.

5. Ensures that all employees in their assigned clusters maintain the COMAR requirements each year.

6. Performs human relations functions, including employee relations issues and counseling customers, staff, parents and students.

7. Conducts periodic team meetings for bus operators and attendants, school safety assemblies at designated schools, annual bus route reviews, and investigations of unsafe route conditions.

8. Conducts random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug testing.

9. Conducts behind-the-wheel evaluations and instructs safety best practices.

10. Facilitates communication within the team and the depot.

11. Investigates accidents, makes recommendations regarding preventability and conducts post- accident conferences to debrief.

12. Dispatches when necessary.

13. Performs related work as required.
