Transportation Radio Bus Operator

WORKING TITLE: Transportation Radio Bus Operator GRADE: 14 MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, operates a radio bus used to cover bus routes in cases of breakdowns, accidents and emergencies. Takes over routes on a moment¿s notice. Functions as part of the dispatch team at the assigned depot, often taking charge of the radio communications, telephones and route coverage when the dispatcher is not on duty or is otherwise occupied. Supervises a number of assigned substitute bus operators and attendants. Helps orient bus operators and attendants to new routes and assists them with operating problems. Is part of the management team of the depot.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of bus routes in an assigned area; working knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents. Working knowledge of the local street and road system. Knowledge of basic arithmetic. Working mechanical knowledge of school bus in order to complete pre-and post-trip inspection of equipment as required by Maryland State commercial driver's license requirements, or ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge. Ability to operate a school bus in the safe and efficient transportation of children. Ability to read, write, communicate orally, understand and carry out written and oral instructions, maintain effective control over groups of children, and work harmoniously with children and others. Ability to read and follow a road map. Ability to drive any size or type school bus in the fleet. Good human relations skills. Ability to supervise bus operators and attendants. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED required. Experience as a school bus operator. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of, or ability to obtain a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver¿s License (air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements), or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to meet prescribed pre-employment and annual physical examination and testing requirements for bus operator I.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Must maintain certification as a Maryland school bus operator.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs certain dispatching functions including radio communications, answering telephone calls from customers, and assigning substitutes to routes.
2. Supervises substitute bus operators and attendants.
3. Responds to calls to take over routes because of breakdowns and accidents.

4. Operates a school bus in transporting children to and from schools; may transport students on field trips and outings.

5. Operates vehicle in compliance with state and county laws and departmental regulations.

6. Takes driving precautions to avoid accidents.

7. Maintains order among students aboard school bus and reports cases of misbehavior to school officials.

8. Completes pre- and post-trip inspections of bus.

9. Checks fuel, oil, and water daily.

10. Responsible for appearance of assigned vehicle and for reporting mechanical defects upon detection to repair shop.

11. Keeps records of operation of bus and submits required reports; compiles and submits accident report information and reports prolonged traffic delays.

12. Attends safety meetings.

13. Forward written and oral messages; gathers loan counts and route data; and performs other work of a similar nature.

14. Performs related work as required.
