SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, operates medium or light weight trucks in the loading and delivery of mail, supplies, furniture, food and other materials. Work involves performing manual and clerical work in the selection, storage, inventory control and issuance of MCPS property. Positions require continuous moving of materials by hand and electric material handling equipment. Employees may operate a vehicle up to 53,200 lbs. gross vehicle weight and are required to follow a strict daily schedule. Employees in this class must operate trucks in accordance with requirements set forth in the Maryland Department of Transportation publication, Lawful Weight Limits.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions necessary to prevent accidents. Knowledge of warehousing and storekeeping practices and procedures. Knowledge of the requirements set forth in the Maryland Department of Transportation publication, Lawful Weight Limits. Knowledge of the operation of power industrial forklifts, pallet trucks and related equipment, including occupational hazards and safety precautions. Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Ability to learn the geography of Montgomery County and the location of streets and school buildings. Ability to rapidly and accurately fill orders, including proper palletization of product. Ability to check mail, foodstuffs, supplies and other materials rapidly and accurately. For the Division of Food & Nutrition Services, the ability to climb to perform daily circle checks as well as temperature checks on refrigeration units. Ability to learn assigned clerical and mail handling tasks rapidly and to follow prescribed routes. Ability to process and sort large quantities of inter-office and incoming U.S. mail. Ability to keep records and reports. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Some positions require the ability to rapidly learn how to handle the delivery of frozen and perishable foods in accordance with established standards and procedures. Ability to work effectively with others. Skill in the operation of medium and light weight delivery trucks and power industrial forklifts, pallet trucks and related equipment. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience as a Warehouse Worker I, stock clerk, or equivalent. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class C noncommercial drivers license and a valid Maryland Class B commercial drivers license (trucks over 26,000 lbs. registered gross vehicle weight) or the ability to acquire the Class B license or equivalent with 6 months of hire. Completion of an OHSA approved certification program on the operation of power industrial equipment or the receive certification training within 6 months of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to grasp/move heavy items weighing up to 100 pounds, to perform work requiring almost continuous moving of materials and frequent climbing. Ability to work in zero degree freezer required for some positions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime, including weekends, as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Loads trucks with supplies, food, books, mail, furniture, or other equipment for delivery to schools and offices.
2. Unloads goods at delivery point and is responsible for having warehouse form signed by authorized school or office employee acknowledging receipt of the shipment.
3. Drives to terminals and railheads and unloads freight cars, loads the freight car shipments into trucks for delivery to schools, offices, or warehouse, as appropriate.
4. Picks up furniture, equipment, supplies, mail and other materials from one school or office and delivers to specified locations.
5. Checks products, equipment and supplies against delivery documents.
6. Fills orders requested on warehousing shipping lists by selecting identified items and verifying selection for accuracy.
7. Prepares items for shipment.
8. Cleans vehicles, warehouse areas, parking lot and adjacent roadways as appropriate.
9. Keeps warehouse items, equipment, property, and work related supplies in neat and orderly condition
10. Operates warehouse handling equipment in the movement of stock.
11.Keeps simple records of work related activities as required
12. Completes required vehicle checks and notifies appropriate supervisor of any issues.
13. Receives and sorts incoming U.S. and Inter-office mail and prepares bulk items for distribution; determines location of employees for whom incomplete address has been given. delivers inter-office and U.S. mail according to a prescribed schedule; makes special pickups as instructed.
14. Operates mailing and postal equipment such as string machines, scales and mailing machines.
15. Performs related work as assigned.
