SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction is responsible for developing and organizing delivery routes and schedules and the assignment of drivers to refrigerated cargo trucks and delivery vans. Arranges for the pick up and delivery of a variety of food products and cafeteria supplies and equipment. Operates forklifts and other powered industrial equipment and instructs other employees in the safe operation of such equipment as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the methods and procedures of food service operations, with particular emphasis in the storage and delivery requirements for perishable pre-plated meals and case lot food products. Knowledge of sanitary requirements regarding the proper handling of food products. Knowledge of the requirements set forth in the Maryland Department of Transportation publication, Legal Weight Limits. Ability to organize, assign, supervise, train, and inspect the work of other employees. Ability to check the quality and quantity of goods quickly and accurately. Ability to detect insect and rodent infestation. Ability to prepare accurate reports. Demonstrated skill in the safe operation of narrow aisle forklifts and other powered industrial trucks. Skill in the operation of trucks weighing up to 46,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. Skill in the operation of a computer terminal or ability to rapidly acquire such skill. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Coursework in warehouse and distribution management preferred. Considerable experience of a progressively responsible nature in scheduling and coordinating a central food service warehouse and distribution service. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Certification of successful completion of a powered industrial equipment operator training program which complies with OSHA requirements, within three months of employment. Possession of a valid Maryland commercial class B driver's license or equivalent within three months of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move heavy items weighing up to 100 lbs. And to perform work requiring sustained moderate physical effort. Ability to work in zero-degree freezer for considerable periods of time.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime, including weekends.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Receives and arranges, in route sequence, shipping lists, produce delivery tickets, and other special requests from schools and outside agencies.

2. Assigns drivers to cargo and step vans.

3. Prepares and maintains manifests for cargo and step van delivery runs.

4. Coordinates delivery shipping lists and other paperwork with scheduled run.

5. Checks completed paperwork for accuracy.

6. Plans maximum utilization of trucks and delivery staff. Insures operational efficiency by utilizing two-way radio.

7. Instructs and assists drivers in the proper merging and loading of produce and dry, frozen, and refrigerated product.

8. Insures outbound and incoming back haul pallet loads comply with weight capacities of delivery vehicles, industrial truck and/or pallet racking in use.

9. Coordinates satellite deliveries and pickups with central kitchen manager.

10. Dispatches cargo and satellite vans as loading is completed.

11. Arranges for back haul of product from MCPS bake centers and from outside vendors.

12. Identifies critical back order items and arranges for emergency delivery to schools.

13. Checks all outbound orders against shipping lists for accuracy.

14. Receives calls from drivers and cafeteria managers regarding discrepancies.

15. Investigates, inventories, and corrects all reported discrepancies.

16. Schedules inbound truck and rail shipments, and determines staff, equipment, and unloading time required to avoid demurrage charges.

17. Checks cleanliness of trucks to insure that proper sanitation procedures are followed.

18. Inspects truck and van refrigeration units for proper operation.

19. Arranges necessary repairs with Transportation Division and outside vendors.

20. Inspects material handling equipment for proper operation and makes arrangements with outside vendors for necessary service.

21. Analyzes and establishes delivery routes and prepares route directions and manifests for school and outside agency deliveries, and for the summer feeding programs.

22. Inspects and road tests delivery vehicles.

23. Prepares year-end mileage reports and conducts a physical inventory of delivery equipment.

24. Evaluates cargo truck and step van drivers.

25. Reacts to drivers request for assistance.

26. Prepares for emergency action if perishable food is involved in the event of a breakdown.

27. Investigates truck accidents and prepares accident reports.

28. Arranges for emergency pick up of perishable food from schools when cafeteria equipment breaks down.

29. Uses computer terminal to input delivery requests, and to input delivery route information into the SLICS system.

30. Operates delivery vehicle weighing up to 46,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight as required.

31. Operates fork lifts and other powered industrial trucks and instructs other employees in the safe operation of such equipment.

32. Performs related work as assigned.
