Procedures for filling permanent vacancies of most entry-level and non-managerial positions are governed by the negotiated contract between the Board of Education and the supporting services employees bargaining unit, SEIU Local 500. In the event the position advertised is excluded from the SEIU Local 500 contract (712K PDF) or there are no qualified inside applicants, applications from non-MCPS employees will be considered.

General Information

Background Check
If you are offered employment by MCPS, you are required before beginning your assignment, to obtain a background check (at your expense of $54.00 or $36.00 for Volunteers) by the State of Maryland and FBI. The background check can only be obtained through fingerprinting (by appointment only) with Greg Jones, Office of Human Resources, 301-279-3276. Hours for appointment scheduling are from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

Once You Are Offered and Accept Employment You Must Do The Following:
Forms: complete an I-9, W-4 and post-employment data form sheet at the Office of Human Resources. All newly hired employees as a condition of employment, are required to to sign up for direct deposit (121K PDF).

Identification: You will need two forms of identification, which may include two of the following: drivers license or Department of Motor Vehicle identification, Social Security card, birth certificate with a raised seal, passport, or valid alien registration card.

Orientation: All new permanent employees are required to attend a new employee orientation. A letter will be sent to your home as well as to your supervisor with the time and place for the scheduled orientation. The letter will include information you will need to bring to orientation (including beneficiary Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, etc.).

Payroll/Benefits: All permanent employees who work 20 hours/week or more are eligible for health benefits and must sign up with the Employee and Retiree Service Center within 30 days of their date of hire. Failure to do so within this time limit will affect your ability to obtain health insurance. The Employee and Retiree Service Center can be reached at 301-517-8100.

Generic Requirements

Listed below are generic requirements for some supporting services positions with Montgomery County Public Schools. Some positions offer twelve-month, eight hours per day employment, while others offer ten-month employment, frequently requiring less than eight hours per day. Please do not confuse these general job requirements with the specific advertised job vacancies that change weekly.

BUILDING SERVICE WORKER — Some general cleaning experience preferred.

BUS ATTENDANT — Completion of 9th grade and some experience in working with physically, mentally, and/or emotionally handicapped children; enough physical strength and stamina to help handicapped students on and off the bus, lifting students when required.

BUS OPERATOR — Driver's license held for at least five years, excellent driving record, ability to complete training needed to obtain a Maryland Commercial Class "B" license; ability to pass a rigid physical examination, including drug/alcohol test.

CAFETERIA WORKER I and CAFETERIA WORKER II — Applicants with food preparation experience receive preference in employment. Some positions require the ability to cashier.

ENGLISH COMPOSITION ASSISTANT — Course work in English (degree in English preferred) and some experience involving English composition, grammar, usage, mechanics, etc., preferred.

FOOD SERVICE SATELLITE MANAGER — Some food preparation experience preferred; ability to prepare accurate reports and records. Must qualify on food service satellite manager exam.

PARAEDUCATOR (REGULAR AND SPECIAL EDUCATION) — 30 semester hours of college and one year working with children in structured situations or a two-year combination of college and work experience with children; knowledge of child development. Substitute and temporary assignments possible. Some positions require ability to lift, toilet or restrain students.

MEDIA ASSISTANT — 30 semester hours of college and one year working with children in instructional situations. Experience using computer applications, e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, databases, E-mail and Internet. Typing test (34 wpm).

MEDIA SERVICES TECHNICIAN — High school graduate or equivalent with specialized training and experience operating sound systems, lighting systems and electronic instructional equipment (video, slide tape, etc.).

SECRETARY/CLERK TYPIST) — High school graduate or equivalent with clerical experience. All positions require typing (40 wpm); some require bookkeeping. Preference for word processing. From time to time, temporary assignments become available.

SECURITY ASSISTANT — AA in law enforcement or criminal justice desirable; experience involving student and/or public safety, conflict resolution and investigative procedures.
