| Assists the Director, Department of Transportation,
in planning, organizing and managing the county-wide
student transportation program including all aspects
of the repair and maintenance programs for 1700 MCPS
vehicles, including a large fleet of over 1000 school
buses. Administers, assigns and supervises the overall
countrywide program of vehicle repair; responsible for
operation of five large garages; assures proper school
bus vehicle maintenance and state-mandated safety inspections;
arranges for maintenance on a wide variety of other
MCPS vehicles including large, heavy duty equipment;
coordinates a procurement program for parts, supplies
and shop equipment; assists in formulating specifications
for school buses and other vehicles for procurement
purposes; and assists the director of transportation
in training, budgeting and other areas of administration.

| Thorough knowledge of vehicles specifications.
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, tools
and equipment of the automotive vehicle maintenance and
repair trade; the procurement of automotive parts, supplies,
shop equipment and vehicles; inventory procedures; the
practices and procedures of operating automotive vehicle
servicing and repair garages; automotive fleet maintenance,
repair and inspection programs and procedures; modern
office practices and procedures; record-keeping; and financial
reports. Working knowledge of internal combustion engine,
alternative fuel applications, and related components
theory and operating principles. Thorough knowledge of
the operation of pupil transportation programs, and automated
inventory and fuel dispensing systems preferred. Ability
to administer a complete automotive vehicle maintenance,
repair and inspection program. Ability to develop and
maintain appropriate accounting procedures. Ability to
effectively supervisor employees and to coordinate vehicle
maintenance and repair procedures with other MCPS divisions/departments.
Excellent human relations and oral/written communications
skills. |
| Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college
or university with considerable experience in fleet
vehicle maintenance and repair management. Master's
degree desirable. Course work in the field of education,
automotive trade school training, and experience in
school bus and automotive fleet maintenance and repair
management preferred. Other combinations of applicable
education, training, and experience which provide the
knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform
effectively in the position may be considered. |
| Eligibility for School Transportation Supervisor certification
by the State of Maryland and possession of a valid Maryland
Class B commercial driver's license (passenger and air
brake endorsements) or equivalent. |
| (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to handle stressful situations. |
| (Frequent overtime
or night work required, etc.) Ability to respond to urgent work requirements at
anytime. Must be willing to work irregular hours during
emergencies. |

Administers the following programs: scheduled and unscheduled
maintenance of a large fleet of school buses and other
MCPS vehicles; school bus and other vehicle preventive
maintenance; state-mandated school bus inspections;
vehicle parts, supplies and shop equipment procurement;
computerized vehicle parts inventory;
shop equipment and other vehicle support equipment preventive
maintenance and repair; Gas-boy computerized gasoline
delivery and accounting system; compliance with OSHA
and other safety
requirements and coordination with MCPS Safety Office;
data collection for MCPS/state reports and for state
reimbursement; vehicle insurance repair program; in-house
warranty program approved by major chassis manufacturers;
in-service training program; overall pool car assignment
and repair program; evaluation of all aspects of the
vehicle repair program.
Reviews technical and legal written materials regulating
school bus and other vehicle repair, maintenance, and
operation; ensures proper accounting for vehicle operating,
repair and maintenance costs; evaluates all aspects
of the vehicle maintenance and repair programs; assistants
the director of transportation in the formulation of
school bus and other vehicle specifications for procurement
purposes; prepares budget requests, annual report of
transportation costs and other reports as required;
investigates accidents when equipment failure is suspected;
attends Board of Education and other meetings when vehicle
maintenance and/or specifications are involved.
Performs related work as required.
