Under direction of the Director
of Curriculum and Instruction, the literacy coordinator
is responsible for supporting and coordinating local
high school literacy programs and the school-based
literacy coaches. The coordinator will provide research
information
and support to literacy coaches. The coordinator collaborates
with other offices in the planning and monitoring of
literacy coach effectiveness. The coordinator analyzes
assessment data to guide instruction and intervention.

Thorough knowledge of current literacy
research and best practices including literacy strategies
used to access text in all content areas. Knowledge of
secondary literacy intervention programs including content,
target audience, system requirements, and research base.
Familiarity with MCPS curriculum and assessments. Experience
administering and interpreting literacy assessment instruments.
Ability to use student performance measures to drive
instruction. Excellent oral and written communication
skills. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Master’s degree in reading
from an accredited college or university in reading.
Experience in planning, coordinating, and delivering
professional development. Experience in collaborating
with multiple MCPS offices and stakeholders. Five years
successful teaching experience preferred. Experience
as an administrator or supervisor desirable. Other
combinations of applicable education, training, licensure
and experience,
which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary
to perform effectively in the position. |

Provides research-based information and support to
literacy coaches.
Coordinates the ongoing professional development of
literacy coaches.
Supervises the progress toward certification of literacy
coaches.
Conducts monthly/periodic meetings to update literacy
coaches in current literacy research and state and
MCPS initiatives.
Collaborates with staff in the offices of Curriculum
and Instructional Programs, Organizational Development,
School Performance, Special Education and Student Services,
and the Department of Shared Accountability in the
planning for and monitoring of literacy coach effectiveness.
Analyzes student assessment data, including, but not
limited to MAP-R, SDRT 4, PSAT, and formative assessments
and supports schools to use these data to guide instruction
and interventions.
Collaborates with the Office of Curriculum and Instructional
Programs assessment specialist, and Department of Shared
Accountability evaluation specialist to ensure school
and student success on HAS/MSA.
