OFFICIAL TITLE: Instructional Specialist, High School Athletic Specialist CODE: 0833
WORKING TITLE: High School Athletic Specialist GRADE: REG
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, assists the coordinator of athletics in the planning, implementation, monitoring and administration of the interscholastic high school athletic program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations governing athletics. Knowledge of current research and trends in athletics. Current working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Works, Excel, File Maker Pro and other athletic related software for account management, schedule making, etc. Ability to work effectively with principals, athletic directors, coaches, community members and organizations. Ability to conduct effective meetings for a wide variety of groups. Ability to manage multiple tasks on short notice with ever changing priorities. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university (preference for Master’s degree) with strong background and experience in athletics. Three years successful experience as an athletic director (AD), assistant AD, coach, or similar athletic leadership position.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification for an advanced professional certificate in secondary education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Must be able to move meeting materials, trophies, sports equipment, etc. to and from different sites on a regular basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Evening and weekend work required especially during tournament time. Restricted use of leave during month of July and part of August.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administers all aspects of the Care and Prevention of Athletic Injury Course (P.E. 22).

Visits identified school sites to meet with athletic directors and staff.

Directly administers selected sports, open tournament accounts and roster collection and reporting.

Responds to local school staff, community members and administrative staff.

Attends identified local, regional and state athletic contests.

Serves on a variety of MCPS and MPSSAA committees. Assists with local, regional and state tournaments.

Assists the coordinator of physical education with the supply and equipment bid lists. Works with the procurement unit to develop detailed specifications for the uniform bid list.

On an annual basis serves as co-leader of the High School Athletic Workshop.

Assists the coordinator of athletics with the following duties:

Conducting county wide meetings for athletic directors and high school principals.

Monitoring and work to ensure federal compliance with Title IX, ADA, IDEA, etc., state compliance with MPSSAA regulations and the High School Athletic Handbook.

Staying current in technological advances and research in the field; coordinating training of athletic directors and the procurement of available hardware and software.

Assisting in the planning for construction, renovation and modernization of high school physical education and athletic facilities. Ensuring that detailed specifications and the needs of athletics and physical education are met.

Working with MCPS offices, departments, divisions and units including Global Access, Facilities Management, Construction, Safety and Environmental Health, Accounting, Risk Management, Transportation, Security and Management, Budget and Planning, and Procurement.

Performs related work as required.
