| Under direction, responsible for providing resources
and support to school-based physical education teachers
who are required to provide instruction to all special
needs students under the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA). The position serves as a resource
to school-based administrators and physical education
teachers grades pre-kindergarten through 12 for IDEA,
countywide youth physical fitness program, gender equity
in athletics efforts, and **** assessing safety, accessibility
& compliance of playground equipment with ADA standards.

| Knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA)
and IDEA. Knowledge of assessing physical and behavioral
problems of special needs students using formal testing,
observations, evaluations and monitoring methods. Ability
to explain and help school-based administrators and
physical education teachers understand ADA, IDEA, and
IEP's. Demonstrated ability to plan and provide in-service
training. Ability to create support and resources to
physical educators enabling all students with disabling
conditions to receive appropriate instructional services
and receive the opportunity to benefit from the MCPS
physical education program. Skill in establishing and
maintaining data bases for a number of instructional
and administrative functions related to physical education.
Excellent oral/written communications skills.

| Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
in physical education with an emphasis in adaptive-remedial
and diagnostic-prescriptive teaching. Master's degree
preferred. Minimum of five years teaching experience.
Experience working with program planning and teacher
training for all types of special needs students. Experience
using Macintosh or IBM computers. |
| Meets Maryland state certification requirements for
physical education and special education teacher. |
| (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Requires excellent physical strength to move instructional
equipment, supplies and lift students in a variety of
instructional settings and strategies. Crisis intervention
may require participating in physical restraints. |
| (Frequent overtime
or night work required, etc.) Some weekend and evening work may be required. |

Assists school-based physical education teachers for
grades pre-kindergarten through 12 in all MCPS elementary,
middle, and high schools, as well as special education
and alternative centers, where there are students who
need accommodation and individualized instruction under
requirements of the ADA, IDEA 20 USC 14019(a); 1412(5)(B);
1414(a)(B).
Conducts assessments for pre-referral interventions;
conducts evaluations of psychomotor performance; monitors
re-evaluation for continued services; and conducts observations
to established behavior management programs.
Conducts demonstration lessons for teachers of all
special needs students; conducts teacher training for
age appropriate, diagnostic-prescriptive, specific grade
level instructional strategies and activities that enable
regular physical education teachers to provide appropriate
activities and program opportunities for all special
needs students.
Assists school-based physical education teachers with
development of individualized education plans for physically
challenged special needs students.
Attends meetings with parents of identified special
needs students to discuss diagnosis and establish prescriptive
instructional strategies for those students.
Provides support to teachers of identified special
needs students to comply with IDEA and ADA.
Assists school-based physical education teachers with
monitoring instructional goals for identified special
needs students and assists with adapting a grading scale
for those students.
Collaborates with related services to create a multidisciplinary
approach for providing motor services to identified
students with disabilities.
Creates resources for obtaining adapted equipment and
supplies and develop a lending library in partnership
with physical therapists and occupational therapists.
Creates an on-going training program for physical educators
that will enhance their abilities to provide adapted
physical education programs for students with disabling
conditions who are either mainstreamed or assigned to
a least restrictive environment.
Establishes and maintains databases for documentation
of implementation of ADA/IDEA for physically challenged
special needs students who require special programs,
IEP's and documentation of teacher training.
Assists with assessment of playground equipment for
safety, accessibility, and compliance with ADA standards.
Assists with new construction/modernization/renovation
of facilities projects to ensure compliance with education
specifications.
Assists with annual revisions to the physical education
bid list.
Assists with maintaining the MCPS physical education
Web site.
Performs related duties as assigned. |
