SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:

Responsible for the design, installation, maintenance, security and performance of systems and related software for large scale, enterprise server environments and storage area networks (SANs). Assists the database administration staff for requirements related to the operating systems (Unix or Windows) needed for relational (Oracle or SQLServer) databases. Responsible for design, implementation and maintenance of critical backup strategies. Coordinates with wide area network engineers for requirements related to remote communications with schools and office sites. Participates with applications development teams as required in evaluation, development and implementation of applications software solutions. Participates in the  development, implementation, maintenance and testing for disaster recovery requirements. Provides effective technical leadership to the data center operations staff including monitoring, training, backup services and other daily issues. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

This position requires knowledge of all of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS) to include commitment to students, knowledge of job, professionalism, interpersonal, communication, organization, and problem solving. In-depth, thorough knowledge of server operating system software such as AIX in a large scale environment (20,000+ connected clients). Ability to develop scripts or other automation methods for operational requirements such as  backups and restores as well as support documentation. Additional knowledge with Windows server software for large scale processing beneficial. Thorough knowledge of networking technologies especially TCP/IP to include traffic flow analysis/design and Unix connectivity (NFS, FTP, UUCP, etc.). Thorough knowledge of configuration and operation of enterprise storage area networks (SANs).  Additional knowledge of other network technologies used by MCPS beneficial. Working knowledge of relational databases, especially Oracle or SQLServer. Ability to participate in disaster recovery efforts across multiple platforms in coordination with MCPS IT Security Team. Project management skills in directing complex, technical implementations.  Excellent oral and written communication, human relation and presentation skills.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, electrical engineering, technology management or a related field. Masters degree desirable. Additional documented training related to server operating systems and communications technologies. Considerable experience supporting operating systems software for large scale server based platforms for relational databases. Considerable experience working with communications networks. Experience in the configuration and maintenance of storage area networks.  Experience with project management skills for planning and implementing cross platform solutions. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

None for Unix. MCSE certification from Microsoft helpful, preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Position is required to operate workstations for sustained periods of time.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.)

Ability to work non-compensated overtime, especially during peak periods and when urgent work requirements exist.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides technical leadership to assist in determining strategic direction for operating system software for large scale relational database applications.

Designs, plans, installs and maintains systems software for large scale UNIX based systems. Also provides Windows server based support as needed.

Coordinates and implements technical UNIX requirements for the database administration staff needed for Oracle or other relational database software. 

Designs and implements backup strategies in coordination with the database administration staff.

Provides for system level backup strategies. 

Performs Unix systems administration task such as building file systems, devices, adding users and implements Unix security requirements as directed by the MCPS IT Security Officer.

Provides for in-depth Unix related problem determination and resolution.

Provides in-depth monitoring and applies any required tuning, fixes or upgrades to enterprise server or data storage equipment.

Develops procedures and training for data center operations staff as needed for requirements such as backups, printing services and first level monitoring. 

Provides necessary research, planning, documentation on a technical basis to implement and maintain an MCPS comprehensive disaster recovery program for critical systems. This includes coordination with staff for such needs as large scale servers (UNIX/Windows), WAN (Wide Area Network, LANs (Local Areas Networks), MCPS Internet services and MCPS E-mail services.

Keeps up with current technology related to server operating system software and storage management systems (SANs and NAS) as well as evaluation of possible emerging technologies. 

Participates in research and development efforts involving new technologies in collaboration with other information technology teams in MCPS. 

Participates in development of any needed interfaces or transfer of information between different  databases. 

Performs related duties as required.
