IT Systems Specialist Intern/I/II/III

CLASS DESCRIPTION
OFFICIAL TITLE: IT Systems Specialist Intern/I/II/III CODE: 5160
WORKING TITLE: GRADE: 18-25
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:

Staff in this job family provides all levels of user support and technology administration.  Based on the assigned level, this work may include analyzing and resolving problems related to workstations, networks, servers, and printers; performing systems analysis; designing and implementing configuration changes; and performing related duties as required or assigned.
Supervision Received/Given - Receives general supervision from a designated  supervisor.  May assist with the training of lower-graded employees, as assigned.  May provide guidance and assistance to full-, part-time and/or hourly employees, as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Job Specific – Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.  Can demonstrate knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of applicable computer technology and its most effective and efficient utilization; good knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, instructional technology requirements; knowledge of standard microcomputer operating systems and the software used in a network environment; knowledge of multiple microcomputer and network operating systems, and proficiency at standard desktop and communications applications and protocols; and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator’s license and employee-provided transportation may be required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and/or experience.  Experience in user support or technology administration preferred.  Combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

A valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Industry certifications may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) May be required to move computer equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime as required and to respond to emergency work needs.
PAID OVERTIME: Yes (Grade 18 & 20) No (Grade 23 & 25)

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Intern (grade 18)

  • On-the-job training for the IT Systems Specialist I
  • Under close supervision, assists in performing first level support for technology hardware and software in schools and offices.

IT Systems Specialist I (grade 20)

  • Entry level position
  • Under general supervision and guidance performs first level support for technology hardware and software in schools and offices
    • Coordinating hardware maintenance and repair activities
    • Performing routine desktop equipment maintenance
    • Installing, maintaining, and upgrading workstation or server software
    • Analyzing and resolving basic desktop application problems
    • Installing computer peripherals
    • Ensure use of local area network best practices
    • Acts as liaison for assigned school or office to secure other technology services (such as training or second level support) tracking all requests and problems until fulfilled or resolved

IT Systems Specialist II (grade 23)
In addition to the ability to perform all the duties of the IT Systems Specialist I, the level II specialist’s primary or most important duties consist of the following tasks which require consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion:

  • Performs second level support for technology hardware and software in schools and offices
  • May support system-wide applications and programs (for example, e-mail applications, security program, technology modernization program)
  • Participates on project teams overseeing implementation of new technology solutions
  • Serves as lead project manager for process improvement teams
  • Assists in research and development initiatives as a site participant
  • Assists staff with assessment of technology hardware and software needs by applying system analyses techniques and procedures when consulting with users to determine hardware, software or system functional specifications including converged telecommunication networks.
  • May participate in the design, development, documentation, analysis, creation, testing or modification of computer systems or programs, including prototypes, based on and related to user or system design specifications.
  • May participate in the design, documentation, testing, creation or modification of computer programs related to machine operating systems

 

IT Systems Specialist III (grade 25)
In addition to the ability to perform all the duties of the IT Systems Specialist I and II, the level III specialist’s primary or most important duties consist of the following tasks which require  a significantly higher  level of independent judgment and discretion:

    • Performs systems integration, supporting multiple systems
    • Prepares process and problem resolution documentation, including non-technical descriptions for users
    • Develops procedures and solutions for system-wide application programs
    • Administers technology products and applications (for example, upgrades and patches)
    • Serves as lead project manager for new technology initiatives, including development of project descriptions, report to management, and managing resources (people and funding)
    • May design and conduct formal training classes or provide one-on-one training, with special emphasis on use of the network, server, workstation, and software applications.
