OFFICIAL TITLE: Data Systems Specialist CODE: 5320
WORKING TITLE: Security Systems Specialist GRADE: 22
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs technical data systems management work, testing, evaluating, modifying and maintaining computer operating systems. The work of the class involves designing, operating and maintaining data systems used to support important security, administrative, planning and instructional programs. Work consists of setting up, programming and maintaining databases on microcomputers; positions may also serve as the principal technical user/designer of mainframe databases, which are maintained by central data processing staff Workers have substantive knowledge of the data and its uses, which permit them to design, program, and manage the data systems to meet program requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Considerable knowledge of data systems design and management principles and techniques. Considerable knowledge of quantitative methods of analysis and research. Considerable knowledge of computer science. Working knowledge of mathematics and statistics. Ability to design and operate data systems to provide technical information for administrative and planning purposes. Ability to modify, adapt and change systems to meet requirements. Ability to produce and explain technical and administrative reports for non-technical users. Ability to perform computer programming as required and to apply mathematical and statistical procedures to the analysis of data. Good communications and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree, including courses in computer science and/or programming. Experience in data systems design and management that included the application of mathematical and statistical analysis to large and complex databases. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: None
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sustained operation of computer terminal for prolonged periods.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Installs network operating systems, a wide variety of updated software packages and products and
resolves associated problems/malfunctions

Attends meetings to provide technical input on technology and enterprise security standards

Carries out software upgrades, subsystem integration, and configuration modifications.

Provides advanced level support for web and e-mail filtering, systems management, and application configurations.

Interacts with other departments in the maintenance of security procedures.

Monitors and documents uptime of network operating systems and assessment applications; works with vendors, other MCPS staff in IT security problem resolution.

Assists in information security forensic investigations.

Conducts systems vulnerability assessments and systems audit analyses.

Assists in development and management of the disaster recovery plans and the implementation of disaster recovery procedures.

Provides detailed reports for IT security management.

Responsible for data security administration - coding ACF2 access rules, first-level account maintenance support for directors/principals.

Installs, maintains and provides problem determination and resolution for ACF2, CAI tape management software.

Maintains tape robotics (ATL/VTS) and manages the MCPS tape library for mainframe data.

Monitors DASD (disk drive systems) installation and utilization.

Provides capacity planning reports.

Creates, modifies and tests security classes and form/tab access.

Generates user accounts while granting appropriate security access and maintains request forms for auditing purposes.

Documents procedures and templates. Provides auditing reports to stakeholders.

Enforces password changes for enterprise systems, coordinating through the Help Desk.

Oversees the work of assistant in performing HRIS security administration tasks.

Troubleshoots computer system problems and provides technical assistance on all aspects of system operation and maintenance, including call-in, on-site, and remote diagnoses.

Meets with vendors to discuss new hardware/software and network/enterprise security technologies.

Performs related duties as required.
