| Under direction, analyzes the
Department of Materials Management's requirements for
mainframe, microcomputer and data interchange applications.
Develops system and program design specifications and
writes/implements programs to interchange data between
MCPS and our vendors and service providers. Provides technical
support to staff regarding the planning, installation,
and on-going operation of computer networks, software
and data interchange solutions for the Department of Materials
Management. |
Considerable knowledge of personal
computers, software and operating systems. Knowledge of
Materials Management uses of computers including EDI of
POs and Invoices, large scale fax-on-demand and the Request
Processing System. Knowledge of current technologies used
in local area networks, Client/Server development (Oracle
and PowerBuilder) and ability to learn and apply new technological
solutions as they become available. Knowledge of network
operating systems and database management systems such
as Novell, Unix, Oracle and IDMS.
Ability to install, maintain and troubleshoot computer
systems on networks involving multiple applications operating
in a multi-platform environment. Ability to apply logic
and demonstrated skill in integrating several parts of
a system into one. Ability to work effectively with Materials
Management staff in installing/maintaining the developed
solutions. Ability to think logically and solve problems.
Ability to teach users and others how to use new technologies
and systems. Good communication and human relation skills. |
| Bachelor's degree from an accredited
college or university with considerable course work in
information technology. Experience in the use of Novell,
Unix, Oracle, PowerBuilder, EDI, Fax Server (including
Fax on-demand) and document imaging. Other combinations
of applicable education, CDP/CSP certification, training,
and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities
and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position
may be considered. |
| Preference for Certified Netware
Administrator (CNA). Maryland Class C non-commercial driver’s
license or equivalent. |

(Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and
frequent climbing.) Position requires occasional operation
of keyboard devices for sustained periods, wiring, and
moving computer equipment. |

(Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Some
overtime, night, and weekend work may be required. |

Functions as overall specialist coordinating all aspects
of a project. Meets with Materials Management staff
to discuss networking and data interchange systems,
applications, requirements, problems and related matters.
Works with technical staff to provide support for design,
installation and maintenance of local networking and
data interchange systems. Attends meetings to provide
technical input on technology standards. Participates
in the installation, configuration, operation, and updating
of computer systems.
Troubleshoots computer system problems and provides
technical assistance on all aspects of system operation
and maintenance, including call-in, on-site, and remote
diagnoses. Reviews and evaluates new software and hardware
products (R&D). Attends meetings to acquire information
applicable to Materials Management's use of technology.
Meets with vendors to discuss new hardware/software
technologies. Provides technical training to Materials
Management staff. Assists in the development of manuals
needed to facilitate technology implementation. Attends
technical training for new hardware/software. Performs
related work as required.
