SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Performs technical assistive technology/augmentative communication equipment services. The work of the class involves the operation, storage, maintenance and loan management of a variety of alternative & augmentative communication (AAC) devices and assistive technology (AT) equipment and software used by students throughout MCPS who are receiving InterACT services. Worker checks equipment in and out, keeps inventory records, sets up and programs equipment and demonstrates its operation to staff and families as needed. The equipment consists of voice output devices (such as Step by Step Communicators, TechSpeak, Springboard, DynaVox) and alternate computer/device input peripherals and software (such as joysticks, single switches, alternate keyboards, onscreen keyboards) and similar equipment. Position is located with the InterACT (Interdisciplinary Augmentative Communication and Technology) Team. Incumbent is expected to have the ability to perfonn the spectrum of technical duties and responsibilities encompassed in this classification as assigned, to learn the operation and use of new equipment as acquired, and to stay current with new technological developments in the area of assistive technology.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Knowledge of programming a variety of voice output devices and customizing alternate access setups for computers and voice output devices. Knowledge of the methods and techniques involved in the inspection, operation, cleaning, control and maintenance of a variety of AAC and AT equipment. Ability to provide information/consultation services and training and to assist in the development of adapted curriculum/instructional materials under the supervision of an InterACT Team professional. Ability to work effectively with InterACT Team members, school teams, families, company representatives and members of the community. Ability to operate, inspect, clean, maintain and control a variety of AAC/AT equipment. Ability to learn the technical characteristics and operation of new equipment. Ability to use computer applications such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets and multi-presentation software. Skill in determining equipment operation problems. Ability to perform minor electronic repairs. Skill in instructing others in the operation and preparation of materials adapted for students with disabilities being served by the InterACT Team. Good communication and human relation skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school supplemented by coursework and/or combination of DRAFT proposed by InterACT Team January, 2005 li training in the areas of AAC/AT equipment and experience in programming and operating assistive technology. Experience working with students with disabilities preferred. Associate degree or certificate in information technology desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necess ary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class C driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to lift and move moderately heavy items and equipment, climb ladders and work from high
places. Ability to perform work requiring considerable walking, stair climbing and moving equipment
from room to room.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime as required by school/other activities. Some positions may require use of personal vehicle to transport equipment and materials.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises and coordinates the engineering, programming, and production operations of a school-based television facility. Converts program ideas and subject formats into cablecast performances and monitors production activities. Plans and designs studio settings, backgrounds and equipment installations for current operations. Schedules off-air transmissions, directs videotape recordings, and rehearsals, has responsibility for carrying on continuous program research and evaluation. Works extensively with the instructional staff and students in the planning, staging, and execution of auditorium/theater productions. Trains student crews in set construction, props location, lighting, hookup of audio and video projection equipment, arrangement of special effects, etc. Assists in coordinating elements of floor production during rehearsals and live presentations. Follows current MCPS policies and guidelines for safety rules and OSHA regulations as well as draws up safety standards based on the local school facility. Enforces operational safety and security standards with regard to proper usage of the auditorium/communications facility. Provides assistance to students and staff in the preparation of multi-media and graphic materials such as audio/video tapes, slides, charts and transparencies. Assists teachers and students in the planning and producing of media programs. Provides instruction to staff and students on proper operation of media equipment. Sets up and operates instructional equipment systems for classroom activities or special assemblies to include audio/video recorders, monitors, projectors, PA systems, cameras, etc. May operate camera or prepare sound tracks for video/slide productions. Provides informational and consultant services related both to the development of curriculum materials and classroom media presentations. Assists teachers in the delivery of media oriented course work to students. Recommends media program and presentation techniques and equipment to staff and students. Converts media program ideas and subject formats into productions. Orders and updates audiovisual related items and supplies with approval of media specialist. Prepares materials for original media production and assists teachers, other staff, and students in the production of such materials. Trains student aides in the operation and preventive maintenance of instructional equipment. Works with staff to ensure proper storage and security of school audiovisual, television, and computer systems. Maintains statistics for reports on circulation, resource needs, etc. Operates, maintains, inspects, distributes and undertakes repairs on instructional equipment in accordance with MCPS policies and procedures. Independently performs or assists school personnel in a broad range of multimedia activities. Maintains current inventory on all instructional and computer equipment. Performs related work as required.
