A Message from Superintendent Jack Smith Concerning the Tragedy in Santa Fe, Texas

Today’s unspeakable tragedy in Santa Fe, Texas has shaken us all. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) family are with the students, staff and families who are grieving in the wake of this shooting.

It is unimaginable that once again we are faced with such a horrific attack in a public school that has claimed the lives of innocent children. School buildings should be safe havens for students—a place where all students feel welcome and can learn and thrive. Safety is the first priority of school systems around the country, but we can’t do it alone.  Federal and state officials must act now to help us keep our schools safe and prevent yet another tragedy.

As a father, grandfather and educator, I know the worry and concern that such a tragedy sends throughout every community. I want to reassure you that we continue to take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously, and will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure that our children can learn in a safe environment.

We know that it is difficult for parents to talk about this kind of violence with their children. To assist in these conversations, we have posted some helpful resources on our website, http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/preparedness/index.aspx#other. In addition, school counselors will be available in schools on Monday to help students and staff cope with the emotions and feelings that naturally occur following such a tragedy.

Sincerely,
Jack R. Smith, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
