MCPS Students Win National Verizon Innovative App Challenge

February 5, 2016

Six Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have been named Best in Nation winners in the annual Verizon Innovative App Challenge for AutBuddy, a mobile app concept that will help bridge the communication gap facing students with autism and their teachers. The students are from three MCPS middle schools.

The students: Saahith Tupakula, Eashana Subramanian, Madhuri Kola , and Ojas Jagtap, all from Rocky Hill Middle School; Raiyan Rizwan from Parkland Middle School, and Neha Chandra from Roberto Clemente Middle School are a part of the Montgomery County Adventure in Science team. They are among eight teams to win the Best in Nation Award for their app and will receive a $20,000 grant from Verizon.

The Verizon Innovative App Challenge, hosted by the Verizon Foundation and administered by the Technology Student Association, is designed to encourage U.S. middle and high school students, working in teams with a staff advisor, to develop a mobile app concept that addresses a real need or problem in their school or community.

The students will now have the opportunity to develop their app with help from experts from the Center of Learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Once the development is complete, the app will become available for download from Google Play and the Apple App Store. The team will present their app at the National Technology Student Association Conference in June.
