MCPS Students Advance in Siemens Science Competition

Thirteen Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have been named semifinalists in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology and three of those students have been selected as regional finalists.

Garyk Brixi of Winston Churchill High School, Robert Yang of Montgomery Blair High School and Yi Zhu of Thomas S. Wootton High School were named regional finalists, and will now compete in one of six regional events to be held in November. Winners of these events will compete at the national finals in Washington, D.C., in December, with a chance to win a grand prize scholarship of $100,000.

A total of 13 students from Montgomery Blair, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Winston Churchill, Richard Montgomery, and Thomas S. Wootton high schools were named semifinalists in the competition. 

The Siemens Competition is the nation’s leading original research competition for high school students. It is sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and is administered annually by Discovery Education. Nearly 2,000 students from across the nation registered for the 2016-2017 competition, representing 1,600 projects submitted. Students in the Siemens Competition are vying for college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 in individual and team categories.
