MEDIA ADVISORY: School, Community Leaders to Break Ground on New Edison High School

November 2, 2016

School and community leaders will join staff and students on Thursday, November 3 at 11:30 a.m. to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new Thomas Edison High School of Technology. High school students at all MCPS schools have the option to apply for enrollment in one of Edison’s 17 career and technology programs. Students attend Edison every day for three class periods and earn 1.5 credits per semester. In addition to providing valuable professional certifications and licenses, students also may earn college credit.

The revitalization/expansion project will replace the current school, which was built in 1982. The new Thomas Edison is expected to open in August 2018 and will feature the Junior Achievement Finance Park. The financial literacy program will be offered to all Grade 7 students. The Junior Achievement Finance Park experience begins with four weeks of classroom curriculum, culminating with a day at Finance Park, where students will be immersed in a reality-based, decision-making process that addresses budgeting, health care, investments, philanthropy and banking. The onsite activities allow students to execute what they learned in the classroom and provide a strong foundation to understanding how to maintain a realistic personal budget.
