Pedestrian Safety Measures
Pedestrian safety along East-West
Highway has been a concern to many for a long time. The
school's large number of walkers and its open-lunch policy
mean a lot of students use East-West Highway throughout
the day, especially around school start time, dismissal
time, and lunch time. The school's modernization in 1999-2002
provided the opportune time for the school community to
work with elected officials and the State Highway Administration
to find ways to improve pedestrian safety.
In 2002, a traffic light was
installed at Montgomery Avenue and East-West Highway, making
it easier for pedestrians to cross the two streets, and
for cars to access B-CC's Chelton Street entrance and its
East-West Highway entrance. The traffic light at Chelton
Street and East-West Highway also was modified to allow
cars to turn right on red except around school start time
and dismissal time. The following year, a lane on East-West
Highway in front of the school was narrowed for "traffic
calming," along with a painted median strip and a posted
25 mph speed limit. More recently, the State Highway Administration
has added signage on East-West Highway indicating pedestrian
crosswalks near Chelton Street.
By August 2007, there will
be a new crosswalk across East-West Highway at the school's
driveway, and a 4-1/2 foot high iron fence running the length
of the school property along East-West Highway, with a new
sidewalk which will have a further setback from the road.
A new concrete median on East-West Highway in front of the
school should discourage pedestrians from attempting to
cross East-West Highway at points other than the designated
crosswalks. See
map on these proposed changes.
Parking
Parking forms may be picked
up in the Security Office. Students may bring the application
form and $25.00 fee (check made out to BCC High School)
to school on the first day. Security will be in the security
office before school, after school, and during lunch throughout
the first week of school. The following rules must be observed.
No parking permits will be issued to students with financial
obligations.
-
Students who plan to park on school
grounds must have either a Semester Parking Permit or
a OneDay Temporary Parking Permit.
-
Students are expected to drive in a
safe manner.
-
Students must park only in the designated
Student Parking Lot(s).
-
Students are not to loiter around their
cars and may not return to their cars during the school
day unless they have a school- approved early dismissal.
-
All parking permits must be prominently
displayed for all to see.
-
Parking permits cost $25.00 per semester.
-
If a student does not purchase a parking
permit and finds that he/she must drive to school one
day for an excused early dismissal, i.e., medical appointment,
he/she can pick up a one-day parking permit with his/her
early dismissal note. (The note the student brings in,
explaining the reason for the early dismissal, must
also state that the student needs to drive that day.)
The OneDay Parking Permit must be displayed prominently
and the student must park in the designated student
parking lot.
-
If a student allows his/her permit
to be used in an automobile not registered on the application,
that student and his/her parents/guardians are responsible
for any violations made by the driver of the unregistered
automobile.
-
Failure to comply with the above expectations
will result in revocation of the parking permit.
