Course
Description and Objective
Welcome to Drawing and Design A! This course will provide students
experience with various drawing mediums and methods including
applications of design skills and an awareness of art history
and cultural representation. Upon completion of the course, students
should be able to:
- Demonstrate skill
in creating products with a variety of drawing mediums and design
methods.
- Analyze and comment
on historically significant artists and works of art from a
structural, historical, and cultural perspective.
- Demonstrate ability
to create products that reflect personal style and problem solving.
- Develop a quality
art portfolio representative of their exploration in the arts.
Students are expected
to attend class according to the MCPS attendance policy, demonstrate
comprehension of assignment objectives and attainment of indicators
of learning through daily production of art products, sketchbook
assignments and classroom activities. Students should expect to
spend additional time outside the scheduled class time for completion
of journal or sketchbook assignments.
Units of study will include art and design principles, drawing
media concentration, pen and ink illustration, still life, logo
design, figure drawing and portraiture. Detailed assignment objectives
will be provided.
Grading
Procedure
Grades for each assignment/unit will be based on the new MCPS
Grading and Reporting Policy.
Portfolio
Assignments:
A letter grade based on A-E scale or 10% on a 100% scale will
be given to each portfolio assignment that will be averaged at
the end of each marking period. Within each assignment, grades
will be based on specific visual, technical, and critical aspects
of the art process as indicated on the rubric.
Late
Assignments
Assignment due dates are expected to be recognized. The highest
possible grade for late work is a B. Assignments may be turned
in late within one week after the due date. Projects will not
be accepted after for grading after this time.
*Students having
difficulty with an assignment or who wish to redo an assignment
may request additional time only after consultation with the
instructor and submit the work by the agreed upon date. All
work must be done outside of class so that the student may keep
up with current work.
Sketchbook
/ Journal Assignments:
Students will complete 1 sketchbook assignment each week throughout
the marking period. These are graded on an A-E scale or 10% scale
out of 100%. These assignments relate to the subject of class
projects or course outcomes to provide improvement and extension
of skills as well as to enable concept development.
Portfolio
Review:
Students will submit a cumulative body of artwork at the end of
each quarter demonstrating their progress toward Maryland Essential
Learner Outcomes.
Materials
and Supplies
Studio Fee – $15.00 per semester for this
course
Sketchbooks – a spiral bound sketchbook,
preferably 9” x 12” or larger
Other art materials and supplies are provided for each portfolio
assignment.
