RESEARCH WORKBOOK |
| Rate yourself on a scale from 4 – 8 4 – minimally

Independent ResearchYour workbooks should successfully and consistently demonstrate research that explores the subject in ways that not only define it, but explores the many related aspects involved, e.g. if a particular movement is involved, say Dadaism, an explanation should be given as to what the movement was about, what that movement meant to the visual arts, and what artists might have been involved in that movement. If a particular material is mentioned, how it is used, and what techniques there are, should be demonstrated through experimentation. Your research should show appropriate breadth and depth, and demonstrate that the findings are thoroughly understood by you. 4 5 6 7 8 Critical ResearchYour workbooks should show a methodical examination of the meaning and significance of the visual and functional qualities of art related to the theme under consideration. What critical characteristics are given to the work historically and presently? Using the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, you should analyze the qualities that might make the work significant aesthetically. 4 5 6 7 8 Contextual ResearchYour workbooks should relate the socio-cultural and historical contexts of the subject under consideration. A broad consideration of multicultural impacts related to the work, artist, movement or medium under consideration should be explored. What was happening in the world, or in society, which might have impacted the creation of this subject? What was happening in the art world? Your research should not be limited to a few cultures, but throw a wide net to produce a more international approach. You contextual research should be appropriately integrated throughout the workbook. 4 5 6 7 8 Visual ResearchYour workbooks should illustrate a comprehensive exploration of a range of visual qualities and ideas related to the work. Through a variety of original and recycled images. technical practice and experimentation should be represented. This exploration should be represented in a varied or divergent approach, as well as unified approach in the study of expressive forms. For example, you might use only traditional approaches to the use of a material, or you might experiment in a way that includes other less conventional methods, or the use of other materials to produce a variation on an accepted approach. 4 5 6 7 8
