Child Development 1B, 2B

Spring 2007

Instructors:
Ms. Maria Bayona
Carolyn C. Breen, Ph.D.   Email

Grade Level: 10 -12

Course Description:
          This class is designed to increase the students’ knowledge and understanding of teaching and working with three and four year olds. The students will learn about the four areas of child development (cognitive, social, physical, emotional) while developing techniques and strategies for teaching the preschoolers. The class is designed to be hands on from the end of September, when preschool opens after one month of background training. Students will develop and implement lesson plans that reflect MSPC curriculum objectives; they will also establish an effective classroom routine.
          By means of participation in four areas: research, planning, teaching and observation, the students will become effective preschool teachers. The class is divided into four teams during the first month. Each team member needs to be constructively working on a specific aspect of child development throughout the five day week. (without preschool children attending), after reflection on the week’s teaching, students will continue to work on the four areas (research, planning, teaching, observation of children and peers). Throughout the year CD2A students must also demonstrate completion of requirements working towards their 90 clock hour certificates.
          There are two overlapping levels for this curriculum. Responsibilities for students in 2A include those outlined below, as well as additional readings and more initiative in the classroom. The students from 2A are required to design and implement new curriculum projects with the children; level 2A must demonstrate a deeper grasp of theory and practice in the field of child development.

Course Outcomes:
          The students will develop the following:
          1. Relate an understanding of self and others in human relations skills
              needed for careers in child development;
          2. Acquire knowledge of the growth and abilities in all developmental areas;
          3. Apply developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood education
              programs for children from birth through grade three;
          4. Create healthy, safe, nurturing, and compassionate environments for children;
          5. Demonstrate unbiased practices appropriate for an equitable environment
              responsive to diverse populations;
          6. Recognize the integrated roles of the home, family caregivers, school and
              community in the life experiences and education of children; and
          7. Demonstrate personal and technological employment skills related to
              career choices in child development.

Class work expectations:
          This is a hands-on class, and students are required to be in class in order to receive the maximum benefit. Students must work willingly and get involved with the preschoolers; students will be required to work individually and in groups, both large and small, for the benefit of the whole class.

Grading and Assessments:
          Students will be graded in a total points system (approximated in a percentage here) based on the following categories: Lesson Planning and Implementation (Teaching), Observations and Articles (including textbooks and study guide worksheets). This is a participation-based class and many things cannot be “made up”-- just try to be present, get involved! There is no semester/final exam.

Daily team meetings and written work is required, not just on Fridays!
