Software Applications by Design B – Grades 9-12
Prerequisite:  Attainment of the outcomes of Software Applications by Design A
2904  #  ½ credit

Learning Outcomes: Students design and complete authentic databases as they continue to use software applications in a project-based environment.   Students then learn how to post these presentations on the Internet and use their speaking skills to share their presentations with the class.  Development of simple web pages using an editor will be included.  Students may elect to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification core-level examinations for Microsoft Access and Microsoft PowerPoint at the conclusion of this course.

Description: The primary software will be Microsoft Office 2000 Access (third quarter) and Power Point (fourth quarter).  Our study of databases (Access2000) includes collecting information and organizing the data to make finding specific data easy. We will study Tables, Forms, Queries and Reports.  A major third quarter project will require collecting data, placing it into a database, analyzing data and presenting the results in a meaningful manner.  Our study of presentation software (PowerPoint 2000) will include designing and creating professional-quality slide presentations.  We will apply skills from Word, Excel and graphic manipulation to create the presentations. All students will do a group PowerPoint presentation for the final exam.

Students can use the media center after school until 3:30 and the cyber café until 4:00 to complete work out side of class.  Also the labs will be open for one-half hour after school except Mondays for help and makeup.  All missed quizzes must be made up at lunch or after school.  All students will take a pre and post-test based on MOS objectives.  The MOS test enables one to be certified by Microsoft.

Evaluation: The following B–CC policies are consistent with the new MCPS Grading and Reporting Policy as outlined in Learning, Grading and Reporting Guidelines (MCPS, 2004).  These will apply in all courses offered at B–CC.

l        Teachers will assign grades to reflect individual achievement on course objectives.

l        Teachers will determine grades based on a variety of assessment methods.

l        Teachers will issue progress reports at the 4½-week mark in each quarter.

l        Teachers will establish clear due dates and deadlines.  The maximum penalty for work submitted after the due date but before the deadline is one letter grade on an A-E scale or 10% on a 100% scale.

l        Teachers will record 50% as the lowest possible grade if percentages are used except in cases of academic dishonesty.

Academic Dishonesty

This applies to both written work and oral presentations.  Examples of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to, the following: the willful giving or receiving of an unauthorized text, unfair, dishonest, or unscrupulous advantage in academic work over other students using fraud, duress, deception, theft, trickery, talking, signs, gestures, copying, or any other methodology.

Plagiarism:

·         Submitting or presenting another person's work as your own without proper documentation, including downloaded information from the Internet and lab data.

·         Using another student's material without prior approval.

 Cheating:

·         Giving or receiving information during a test, quiz, and/or class work assignment without teacher authorization.

·         Using hand signals, gestures, and the like during tests or quizzes to obtain/give information.

·         Using unauthorized materials during a test or quiz.

Class assignments, from the text, must be completed with the student following all directions.  Notes will be taken and graded on each lesson.  Students that don’t get a C or better on the open note quizzes will have points deducted from the note grade.  Each lesson will count 46 points (notes 10 points, book assignments: White pages 5 points, Skills Review 10 points, Lesson Applications 3 points, objective list 3 points and Quiz 15 points). Also special projects will be included in the grade.  Homework will be very limited.  All points accumulated will carry the same weight.  Grading Scale: A 90-100; B 80-89; C 70-79, D 60-69
